It has now been over a year since Bush declared ""victory" in
Iraq, and by the time you read this, the "handover" of Iraqi
"sovereignty" will be complete. That the sovereignty to be
handed over is only nominal is easily demonstrated by Colin
Powell's remarks on 27 April, that in order for the government
…instituting "powerful levers for influencing nearly every important decision the interim government will make."
For the past few months we have seen horrific photos depicting
prisoner abuse by US troops and contractors stream out of Abu
Ghraib Prison. The photos are shocking and twisted to most, except
to the cruel and heartless who shrug it off as the cost of war.
Meanwhile, politicians are busy doing their finger pointing,
psychologists are on every news program promoting their recently
concocted syndrome to explain the soldiers' actions, and slimy
lawyers (like UC Ber...

(The following essay was composed for the inaugural issue of THE
DAWN, an anarchist newspaper published out of Oakland, California.)
In setting out to answer the above question, I do not plan to provide
a definition. That is to say, I do not plan to explore the theory or
history of anarchist communism. I will assume the reader is already
familiar with the basic tenets of the anarchist communist tradition

In a post 9/11 climate consisting largely of intolerance and
repression, there has been a lot of debate as to whether or not large
manifestations such as have occurred since Seattle are still proving
effective as a strategy against Empire.
For the first time since Chief Timoney and the Miami PD terrorized
protesters at the FTAA Ministerial in November, the large-scale
direct action demonstration tactic will be tested in two East Coast
