The campaign group Justice for the Mentally ILL was set up two years
 ago to stop unannounced visits to the homes of mentally ill people living
 in the Manchester area.
 Although the government's 'Best Practice Guidance' (in the form of its
 'Verification Framework') specifically says that local authorities should
 give people prior notification of any visit to their homes by council
 employees, a number of authorities have refused to sign up to the
 procedure. Until recently, Manchester City Council was one of them.

The anti-war march in central London on 28th September was followed
 by the usual widely-disparate claims about numbers - anything from
 150,000 to 400,000. The difference this time round of about 250,000,
 however, is telling in itself. Even allowing for the inevitable tendentious
 distortions, it reveals that there were simply too many people to allow an
 accurate estimate.
 Even if the claimed totals are meaningless, there are other indicators of
 scale that can be of use. When the front of the march reached Hyde
 Park, there was still a massive throng backed up at Embankment that

 Attaques contre un centre de recrutement de l’armée américaine
 Ça ne s’était pas vu depuis la guerre du Viêt-nam. Dans la nuit du 13 au 14
 octobre, un centre de recrutement de l’armée américaine a été attaquée à
 San-José, sur la côte ouest. Deux véhicules militaires ont été incendiés vers 4
 heures du matin. De plus les vitres des bureaux de recrutement de la marine et
 de l’armée de l’air ont été fracassées. Un graffiti a été laissé en guise de
 signature. On ne peut plus explicite, il disait simplement «attaque
 préventive». La réaction des officiels du bureau de recrutement laisse songeur
