Newell est une entreprise spécialisée dans les accessoires métalliques pour
fenêtre, tringlesà rideau, etc ... Rachetée par la multinationale Rubbermaid
en 2000, deux des 4 sites français vont fermer d'ici Noël. Les ouvriers de
ces sites (Negrepelisse-82 et Ablis-78) se sont mis en gréve avec occupation
il y a dix jours, pour exiger des indemnités de licenciement plus
conséquentes que la misère que le patron dédaignait leur laisser. A
Negrepelisse, les ouvriers avaient fait appel à la CNT AIT, et un Comité de
Soutien rassemblant familles, amis et villageois les appuyait dans le
mouvement.

Pourquoi sommes-nous si mal informés ?
Dans les médias les informations défilent et se superposent à une telle vitesse qu'il est impossible d'y comprendre quoi que ce soit et encore moins de se construire une opinion critique. On est enfermé dans des schémas ultra simplistes. On peut regarder quotidiennement le journal télévisé, et même lire le journal, sans réellement comprendre ce qui se passe. Pire encore : on croit savoir.
Lorsqu'on vit directement des évènements relatés par les médias ou bien lorsqu'on approfondit ses connaissances sur un thème abordé par les médias, on est frappé par le fossé qu'il y a entre la réalité, et sa version journalistique. On est alors tenté par une interprétation manichéenne dans laquelle une censure directe s'exercerait de la part des institutions et des entreprises de presse sur la production de l'information. Or, les mécanismes de manipulation sont beaucoup plus subtils et les contraintes économiques y jouent un rôle central.
Les médias représentent un outil de pouvoir énorme. Le « bon » fonctionnement de nos « démocraties » modernes nécessite le consentement de la majorité, et c'est à travers les médias que se crée ce consentement. Les pouvoirs réels que sont les pouvoirs économiques, et le pouvoir étatique sont donc amenés à prendre en main cet outil de pouvoir, tout en respectant une façade démocratique.
Information-marchandise
Pour comprendre le fonctionnement médiatique il faut garder à l'esprit que les entreprises de presse sont des entreprises commerciales. Le principal but de leurs propriétaires est qu'elles leur rapportent de l'argent : l'information devient une marchandise comme une autre. Les ventes sont de moins en moins la principale source de financement (voir encart) : ce qui rapporte c'est de vendre de l'audience, un lectorat à des annonceurs publicitaires. Et plus il y a des personnes susceptibles de voir la publicité, plus l'espace publicitaire rapporte. Les entreprises de presse concentrent donc leur énergie sur la vente d'espace publicitaire.
Ce fonctionnement a bien sûr de profondes répercussions sur le contenu des médias en termes d'information. Pour gagner de l'argent, c'est à dire surtout pour vendre de l'espace publicitaire, il est nécessaire de capter le plus large public possible. Donc, au lieu d'avoir pour but d'informer, les médias vont produire un contenu qui va attirer un maximum de personnes. Ce qui va être mis en avant c'est l'information la plus spectaculaire, la plus facile à comprendre, voire la plus divertissante (le sport, notamment). Constamment les médias cherchent le plus petit dénominateur commun, c'est ainsi que l'information est traitée sur un registre émotionnel. Présenter un événement d'un point de vue émotionnel va bien plus capter l'attention du public que l'analyse de ses causes, celles-ci pouvant être relativement complexes et difficiles à expliquer pendant la minute trente d'un reportage télévisé... D'autre part, pour ne pas perdre son lectorat ou son audience chaque media se doit de ne pas remettre en cause les certitudes des gens. De ce fait, le discours véhiculé est très consensuel, il reste dans le cadre des normes les plus largement acceptées, il délivre le discours dominant. Au lieu d'informer, d'apporter quelque chose de nouveau, on se rend compte que les média, pour une très large part, ne font que répéter ce que les gens pensent déjà. Et c'est lorsqu'il y a parfaite symétrie entre ce que le public pense et ce que les médias disent que ces derniers font les meilleures audiences ou possèdent le lectorat le plus large. Serge July, directeur de Libération, affirmait à la création du journal : « Moi vivant, il n'y aura pas de publicité dans Libération ». Que de renoncements depuis…
Journalistes précaires et autocensure
A la base de la hiérarchie médiatique, il y a les journalistes, ceux qui collectent et mettent en forme l'information. Et parmi eux, les journalistes précaires, les pigistes, occupent une place de plus en plus grande. La proportion de pigistes est passée de 7,1% en 1965 à 18,5% en 1998 [1], et cette proportion est beaucoup plus grande si on tient compte des pigistes non titulaires de la carte de presse, et l'ensemble des autres journalistes à statut précaire. « Dans ce rapport marchand régi par la loi de l'offre et de la demande, les pigistes sont dépendants du pouvoir des rédacteurs en chef […] Si les propositions de papiers ou de reportages sont acceptés ou refusés au nom de la qualité rédactionnelle, en réalité, la décision dépend très largement de l'appréciation personnelle et subjective du rédacteur en chef, lui-même tributaire des exigences économiques […] [2] » Obligé de vendre ses reportages pour vivre, le pigiste réussit d'autant mieux qu'il incorpore dans sa propre vision du monde les contraintes économiques de l'acheteur. Il développe ainsi une autocensure qui s'exerce de plus en plus automatiquement au fur et à mesure qu'il intègre les contraintes de son métier.
