(en) Brazil, CAB, [FAQUIR]: It's not natural! Note on the rains in Bahia (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 19 Jan 2023 08:08:27 +0200

What began as an atypical end of the year, with lots of rain instead of the sun characteristic of early summer, turned into one of the biggest disasters ever experienced by Bahian communities. In the last few days we have followed the flood of news about floods, landslides and entire cities submerged by water, in all around 136 cities are in a state of emergency, especially in the South region, which was the most affected. ---- It's the worst flood in the last 35 years, say the headlines, a real catastrophe, there are about 136 cities affected, more than 60 thousand people homeless. ---- We are not surprised by the lack of commotion from the federal government. Thanks to political strife from above, xenophobia and racism directed at our region, the northeast, and especially Bahia, we are not a priority.

We are seen by the south-southeast axis of the country when our waters are crystalline and calm, when our people dance and welcome them with an open smile. Not now, not while we succumb in the middle of the mud, which is not a mere chance of nature.

We know that the disasters that befall us are anything but natural. Even though attention is already focused elsewhere, it wasn't long ago that our beaches were flooded with oil, a criminal spill that hit fishing and shellfish communities hard. Also the waters that rise more than normal, more than has been seen in three decades, is the result of the predatory exploitation of nature, disorderly urbanization, neglect by the State, climate changes that do not begin or end in 2021.

Many quilombola and indigenous communities were affected and devastated by the floods, it is mainly from them that FAQUIR has sought to publicize and support emergency campaigns. These communities know what ancestral knowledge teaches us, it's not the fault of the river, the rain, or the water. The fault lies with the relationship we establish with nature, with the imposition of capital against our territories. That bill always arrives, sooner or later in all regions, and we know that those who pay the price are always the poorest communities, are always those and those who cannot do much in the face of the work of a lifetime flowing down the street . It is always those at the bottom who face the negative balance of profits from mega companies and the State itself.

At that moment, the solidarity of our people also emerges from the mud and wreckage, hundreds of fundraising campaigns and volunteers focus on giving some immediate support to people who have lost everything. There are cities where not even the schools can serve as a place for the homeless, as they were also destroyed, where you need drinking water and matches, food that doesn't need to be cooked and everything else basic.

It has always been us for us, and at this moment we are also counting on the solidarity of our fellow men and women from other states. But that does not mean that we will close our eyes to the omission of this Government, they owe us, every penny spent on Bolsonaro family revelries, every penny diverted and overpriced, a wealth that must serve the people.

The damage is incalculable for thousands of lives, despair takes over our daily lives and we will not remain silent in the face of this. We cannot naturalize these events, waiting for the next tragedy around every corner. We cannot continue to allow the abusive use of our lands and waters, our fauna and flora.

While those at the top continue to play with our lives and territories, we know that real solidary support comes from the union of peoples, from the union of those who fight to survive and resist this destructive system and that is why we show solidarity with all those who suffer today in Bahia, and we use our media to publicize fundraising campaigns for social movements that have always been at the forefront of the fight against the oppressions of the capitalist system.

The Bahian population needs your support more than ever to continue resisting and rebuilding their territories, donate, share and take a stand.

Resisting and fighting to build popular power and live well among us is our horizon today and always.
