(en) Greece, Libertarian Thessaloniki: For the attack on the occupation of Mundo Nuevo (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sat, 10 Sep 2022 10:30:05 +0300

On Friday, May 20, a diy drag show & hip hop live took place at the Mundo Nuevo occupation. While the live was in progress on the roof of the occupation and while the door of the occupation was closed due to limited capacity, a group of people attacked it, spray writing on its walls phrases such as "wash trespassers" and "transphobia stinks". but also by throwing placards that, among other things, read "Mundo Nuevo is not a safe space". That is, these people chose the moment when queer subjects were inside a space to represent a type of crusade against the space that hosted them, accusing it of not being a safe space for them. Somewhat contradictory as that night the subjects who temporarily made Mundo Nuevo a non-safe space were the ones who attacked.

It is a given that this action is irresponsible to say the least. When individuals attack in an organized manner in a political space full of people it is always possible that either a disturbance will be caused with bad consequences or that the security of the space will intervene drastically against the individuals who attacked - especially given that such a movement would only be expected from fascists - or both the two together. However, the problematic character of this act and the logic that presupposes it, is wider than even this finding.

The wider anarchist/anti-authoritarian/libertarian space is very far from being considered to advocate a concrete and homogenized concept that represents all its actors, whether collectives of any kind or individuals. This fact in itself is not something negative, rather the opposite. The different perceptions, analyzes and positions very often can come into conflict with each other within the movement, they can clash politically, while, sometimes, there can be ruptures. Ideological and political disagreements, even conflicts, can often, through fermentation and co-formation, produce positive results and steps forward.

Within the libertarian movement, the acceptance of a plurality of opinions and perceptions interacts with a culture that recognizes that despite our diversity, we are on the same side of the fence. This culture sets some limits on the ways in which the conflict will be expressed, it makes us realize that it is one thing to compete with the state and capital and another to criticize, disagree or even break with a part of the movement. In the end, the interaction of the above two elements must set as its goal the strengthening of the struggles and not the self-affirmation of some ideological identity.

In the above-mentioned incident, we are unable to discern even nuggets of anti-authoritarian thinking or even some minimal feature that points to action against oppression and in favor of inclusiveness. We are only observing a reproduction of the dominant ideology of individualization and cannibalism, the "all against all" logic. Unfortunately, there were and always are people who, while they consider themselves part of the movement, instead of giving their energy and dynamism to the battle against the Authority, are primarily oriented towards attacking other parts of the movement that have different perceptions than themselves/ es - with the political wrapping of this perception and practice, changing according to the ideological "fashions" of each era (in this case, a version of postmodernism). In short, there are many targets for raids against transphobia and, more broadly, the patriarchy: police departments, pimps, shops that launder money from trafficking, companies and shops whose owners are rapists, the church, and -unfortunately- many more. Attacking an occupation certainly does not advance any struggle against patriarchy.

In Mundo Nuevo, the collectives housed there as well as the people who participated that night in the drag show and the live show, we must express our non-negotiable solidarity and declare that any attack there is an attack on us as well. Beyond that, it is certain that we will do everything in our power to preserve the wealth of the libertarian movement, the polyphony and the unhindered expression of any disagreement, but always, on the basis of companionship and mutual respect, while at the same time fighting against in perceptions that attempt to make the movement an authoritative arena, offering the state and capital what they have failed to do for decades.

Every attempt to consolidate a monolithic logic and every attempt to normalize cannibalistic practices within the movement will find us opposite, wherever it comes from, however self-justifying it may be.
