(en) Czech, AFED: Communism without anarchy is slavery - Conclusion of Kropotkin's essay Communism and Anarchy [machine translation]

Date Thu, 16 Sep 2021 09:30:44 +0300

(...) Of all the institutions or forms of social association that have been tried so far, it is communism that guarantees the individual the greatest freedom - provided that the basic idea of the commune is freedom, anarchy. ---- Communism is able to accept all forms of freedom or oppression - which other institutions cannot. It can function as a monastery in which everyone listens blindly to the superior, but it can also be an absolutely free association, leaving the individual full of freedom - an association that lasts only as long as those who make it up want to be together that does not dictate anything to anyone, on the contrary, he jealously protects the freedom of the individual, enlarging and expanding it in all directions. It can be authoritarian (in which case the commune will soon perish) and it can be anarchist. On the contrary, the state cannot be like that. It is authoritarian or ceases to be a state.

Communism guarantees economic freedom better than any other form of association, because it can guarantee prosperity, even luxury, without asking more than a few hours of daily work instead of a whole day. However, giving a person time off for ten or twelve of the sixteen we live a conscious life every day (eight for sleep) already means extending an individual's freedom to the point that has been the ideal of humanity for thousands of years. It can happen today. In a communist society, one could have at least ten hours off. And that is liberation from the most severe slavery that rests on man. This is an extension of freedom.

To recognize everyone as equal and not to try to control man by man is a further extension of the freedom of the individual to a point that no other form of association even allowed in a dream. However, it will only become possible if the first step is taken; if a person is guaranteed his existence and is not forced to sell his power and intelligence to anyone who wants to give him alms for exploiting him.

Finally, it must be recognized that the basis of all progress is the diversity of employment, and to organize so that one is absolutely free in moments of leisure and to change one's job, and to educate one from childhood to this diversity - and this can easily be achieved in communist establishment - which means even more liberating the individual and opening wide gates before him for full development in all directions.

The others depend entirely on the principles on which the commune will be based. We know a religious community where a man who felt unhappy and betrayed his grief was approached by a "brother" who said, "Are you sad? And we know a community of seven people, one of whom asked for the names of four committees - for horticulture, for nutrition, for farming and for export - with the absolute rights of the chairman of each committee. Certainly, communes were founded or abused by "criminals of authority" (...) after their establishment, and many communes were founded by maniacs demanding the absorption of the individual by society. However, it is not the communist institution that gave birth to them: it is Christianity (eminently authoritarian in essence) and Roman law, the state. This is the basic idea of these people, who think that society is not possible without liars and judges, which remains a constant threat to every freedom, but not the basic idea of communism, which means to consume and produce, without separating the exact part from everyone. On the contrary, it is an idea of freedom, liberation.

We can thus express the following conclusions: Until now, communist attempts have failed because
A / were based on a feeling of a religious nature, instead of seeing in the commune a way of economic consumption and production;
B / were isolated from society;
C / were imbued with the spirit of authoritarianism;
D / were isolated instead of federalized;
E / required a lot of work from the founders that did not leave them free time;
F / were adapted to the patriarchal authoritarian family instead of striving as much as possible for the complete liberation of the individual.

Communism, an eminently economic institution, does not in any way impede the freedom guaranteed to the individual, the pre-warriors, the revolutionaries against the customs they want to crystallize. It can be authoritarian, which necessarily leads to the fall of communes, and it can be free, which in the 12th century, even with the partial communism of the then young cities, created a young civilization full of power, the spring of Europe.

However, the only form of communism that can last is where, as a result of close contact between citizens, everything will be done to spread the freedom of the individual in all directions.

Under these conditions and under the influence of this idea, the freedom of the individual, extended by the already achieved free time, will not be diminished in any way... With anarchy as a goal and as a means, communism becomes possible. Without it, he would necessarily be slavery and could not exist as slavery.
