(en) trier die plattform: Short report from the Fridays For Future demo on July 16. (ca, de, it, pt)[machine translation]

Date Thu, 22 Jul 2021 10:36:11 +0300

Yesterday we stood together with the climate activists from Fridays For Future and other groups on the street in Trier to protest against the completely asleep and always failing climate policy and for a system change. Around 80 people were present. At first, some speeches, including one by activists from the forest occupation, were given, then the demonstration moved through the city, including some busy streets. ---- This protest is overshadowed by the current floods as a result of heavy rainfall here in the region. These have taken countless people at home. They had to be evacuated and many lost their belongings in the water. Currently over 80 people have died and more than 1000 are missing. That this type of extreme weather situation is strongly related to the climate crisis is nothing new. Our region has not seen such a flood since '93. Of course there was something like this before, but climate change ensures that these events will increase now and in the future. Especially in the current season in July, such rainfall is rather unusual.

If we don't act now and take drastic measures that at least curb further global warming, people will die! No measure can be 'too expensive' given the cost (both financial and human) of such disasters! We call on you to support those affected, with donations or clean-up work!

However, we should also consider: Here in Germany and in Europe in general, we still have a relatively 'good' situation. With sufficient funds, infrastructure and a relatively mild climate, we can prepare for such events, at least in theory. But in most regions of the world, especially those on whose back Europe and especially Germany has stolen its prosperity for the last centuries - until today - these funds are not available. And the weather conditions in the global south are more extreme, the floods and droughts more deadly, the battles for resources more bloody. FINTA * in particular is hit again, as they also suffer from the intensified patriarchal oppression in crisis areas.

Thousands of people are already fleeing the consequences of the climate crisis. Thousands of people are already losing their homes. Thousands and thousands of people are already stuck in border camps or on the run - also because Germany is strongly committed to interrupting escape routes and keeping people away from Europe from the EU external border via Libya to Mali. With this we avoid the consequences of our own politics, economy and crimes against humanity - no, we are continuing them even more brutally.

This can not go on like this anymore!

Therefore: Get organized and fight together for a better future and against the climate crisis!
