(en) anarkismo.net: Greece, Call for support for the pan-Hellenic mobilizations of OENGE on the World Health Day (7/4) (ca, de, it, pt)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 11 Apr 2021 08:29:46 +0300

Without a doubt, if the effects of the pandemic have not gotten worse, we owe it solely to a working class sector. They are the doctors, the nurses, the ambulances, the hospital cleaners, all of them who work in the field of health. ---- Without a doubt, if there is one social group that has paid the maximum price for this pandemic, it is neither the elderly, nor those with underlying diseases, nor the vulnerable groups, they are again the employees of public hospitals. There have been a million victims in their ranks and more. It is enough to imagine the unthinkable, that they were forced to work even when they tested positive, until the symptoms paid off.

You do not need hidden cameras and tearful reports to be convinced that this is the most reasonable and expected of people who are constantly in contact with cases in an environment where basic safety measures have not been taken. We must, however, wonder about the veil of silence that has spread around these conditions, about the fact that we have neither hidden cameras nor tearful reports. On the contrary, we hear accusations even that the fact that 80% of patients who die are outside the ICU, as if it is their responsibility that new ICUs were not built, as if they voluntarily choose the role of God or the executioner.

When in the first wave of the pandemic, when there were still few victims, we saw the applause of the regimes to the "heroes", we should have reservations. Fiestas are easy when the time has not come to take responsibility. And now that the time has come, fiestas have no place. Now they are expelling from the hospitals trade unionists who complain about the treatment conditions, now, following the propaganda about "individual responsibility", the doctors are blamed for the victims of the pandemic and if they mobilize, they are accused of irresponsibility.

The reality is that the health care providers, who are lifting all the weight of the crisis, are facing the state, which is only interested in finding where to load its failure, while taking advantage of the situation, to move the heaviest anti-social agenda to one set of other issues.

The health workers are alone. Any request made in the past has proved prophetic in the current crisis, whether it was a shortage of hospital supplies and equipment or staff shortages. Today the state admits that it has no staff to make the vaccines. Where the existing staff has not even been vaccinated the same...

It is certainly more on the table than the well-known state incompetence and partisan aspirations of the right to emerge unscathed from failure. It is the strategic choice of destroying and devaluing public health, as well as any public good for the benefit of individuals. While the pandemic proved the inherent inability of private health to respond to public risks even now the state continues to reward it. Directly and indirectly.

Just think that the monopoly of NSS resources by the pandemic has pushed all the other incidents in the private sector. What was free until yesterday must be paid today. To be paid by those who can afford it, because the poorest see examinations and surgeries postponed... for once.

Even now the health bosses, instead of seeing their shops urged for the public good, are hoarding, while proletarians and lower bourgeoisie are crushed. But all this makes sense, considering that the authorities did not even have the finesse not to rush to be vaccinated before even by the health authorities.

The only ally in this crisis for the social base is itself. And a part of it, the health workers, honors this alliance and more.

We must not leave them alone because it would be immoral and because it does not benefit us.

If hospitals collapse, it will be a disaster.

And in order not to collapse, even at this last hour, we must support the health workers, demand that all their requests be met immediately.

It may not be time for maximalism, but it is time to ask ourselves, from what we see happening around us, in whose hands the NSS should be. The state that promotes private hospitals, that in such circumstances chooses to reduce the health budget, that appoints irrelevant party dogs for hospital administrators or employees? The workers who with their justified chronic demands have shown that they know what is happening and what is needed and with their attitude to the pandemic that they know how to honor their role.

Whatever one considers, there is no question that the NSS needs massive recruitments immediately. That all health professionals should be vaccinated immediately with absolute priority. That hospitals need new ICUs, equipment and consumables.

And that in view of a possible third wave of the pandemic, private health needs to be accelerated as a whole. Every day a part of the dead would have survived, if a part of the trade union demands of the health workers had been satisfied.

How much we will allow this condition to continue and get worse.

To stand on the side of the health.

To support their demands

To defend their mobilizations

With its announcement, OENGE calls for nationwide mobilizations at the entrances of hospitals and health centers on the morning hours of Wednesday 7/4, the World Health Day, while on the same day at 16:00 calls for a central protest rally outside the Ministry of Health in Athena. As an Anarchist Federation, we support the call and the planned mobilizations of OENGE for the immediate and substantial strengthening and shielding of the public health system and the satisfaction of the requests of the doctors, the health workers and the employees in the hospitals.
