(en) Sicilia Libertaria: Achates. Seven months after Dauda's disappearance - EVEN SILENCE KILLS (ca, de, it, pt, tr)[machine translation]

We asked Michele Mililli, of the USB Social Federation, already interviewed by
this newspaper in the September issue, to update us on developments in the Douda
Diene affair. The interview follows. ---- Six months after Daouda's
disappearance, can you tell us if there is any news from the investigators? In
particular, it seems that the investigations are expressly aimed at the owners of
the cement factory where Daouda was last seen. ---- Seven months after Daouda's
disappearance it seems that the investigators have not yet found the key to the
problem. We know that the investigation is open for manslaughter and concealment
of a body and we read in the press that there are some registered in the register
of suspects. A few weeks ago, molecular dogs were used to search for the body on
the grounds of the Longo family business, but no results seem to have emerged. We
fail to understand how it was possible not to carry out some operations close to
the disappearance of Daouda. We know that on July 2 Daouda sends the 2 videos
while working at the Longo family's SGV cement factory, two days later the
missing person is reported. The emergency table for missing persons is activated
immediately in the prefecture. Since Daouda's videos were immediately in the
public domain (we received them after 72 hours), why was it not decided to seize
the area in question? Why haven't the public and private cameras that frame the
path that leads from Daouda's house to the cement factory been viewed? For the
first month, precious time was lost following the trail of voluntary removal. But
right from the start both we and Daouda's friends and family clearly stated that
he could not have left voluntarily, leaving money and documents at home and
having already paid for a return ticket to the Ivory Coast by the end of the
month. I would like to remind you that trucks and lorries come and go
continuously in the company in question. We also learn from the press that the
holders of the SGV have had numerous problems with the law in the past. From the
regional ANSA: "The investigators confirm that Carmelo Longo, father of the
current director of the SGV Calcestruzzi company, has precedents for criminal
association aimed at fraud and auction rigging. Furthermore, Carmelo Longo is the
brother of Giovanni, arrested on 24 October 2019 in the plastic free operation
that shed light on the Carbonaro-Dominante di Vittoria mafia clan and was
conducted by the Ragusa Flying Squad, under delegation from the Catania Dda. The
crimes of mafia association, multi-aggravated extortion, possession of weapons,
illicit trafficking of waste were hypothesized. The Longo brothers, Carmelo and
Giovanni, are the sons of Salvatore Longo, who was killed on 14 November 1990 in
Acate in a mafia-style ambush in which Massimo Leonardi, 18 years old and his
collaborator at the time, was also injured. Longo was hit by bullets in the head
from a car after a brief chase on the Acate - Caltagirone road. The same, just a
year earlier, had escaped another ambush".
But beyond the judicial investigation, some political facts remain that cannot be
overlooked and forgotten, such as the questions referred to above and such as the
fact that the institutions (starting with the mayors of the transformed band to
end up at the provincial table against the illegal hiring) the major trade
unions, the so-called anti-mafia associations and those that get along with the
migrants, the national political forces have scientifically decided not to say
anything on this issue, assuming the responsibility of isolating even more all
those migrant workers, the U.S.B. and the C.U.B, the political fringes of the
extreme left such as Rifondazione and the Anarchists, those few parliamentarians
such as Campo dei 5 Stelle and Suriano di Manifesta, who have instead decided to
put their face in it, to dare to challenge the silence of a city like Achates.
Do you understand that there have been any official steps from the Ivory Coast
embassy?
No, there are no official passages from the embassy. We have tried to get in
touch with the Italian embassy in the Ivory Coast without success
As USB you have promoted a subscription in favor of Daouda's family. Can you tell
us about it and tell us the details for payments?
Since August we have launched this resistance fundraiser, with the aim of
supporting Daouda's family because it has been left without any financial help
and to support the legal and struggle initiatives that we have undertaken in the
meantime. The fundraising launched on gofaund was open until the month of
December and we have raised more than 1,500 euros which we have already sent to
the family in several payments.
Of course, the resistance fund remains active and anyone can contact us directly,
even through our facebook page, and make a small payment. In the coming months we
believe that the legal costs we will try to meet will increase.
In your opinion, the mobilization around this case was up to the task?
Unfortunately not, it was another missed opportunity for the left and for
militant politics in general. For the first few months our small organization
tried to bear the blow in total solitude, the intent was to organize the struggle
of the workers who showed the desire to expose themselves in the first person on
this issue, the second objective was to get out from the Daouda question to the
point of questioning the system of work and exploitation that is scientifically
implemented throughout the transformed zone. Unfortunately, only a few of the
trade union organizations responded to our continuous appeals, and only the CUB
stood by our side in public demonstrations in Ragusa and Acate. Later, since
October, a series of groups that revolve around and depend on the CGIL, such as
Libera for example, but also the left CGIL, have decided to take an independent
path on this question, without ever wanting to confront us, without ever
proposing a common initiative or a participation in our initiatives, taking
responsibility for appearing divided.
Are you planning new initiatives?
We will continue to raise awareness of the Daouda affair and intensify our
efforts to obtain legal defense for the family. In the meantime we are continuing
to build ourselves as a union organization among the labourers, also with the
help of our small union/legal branch in Acate, within the Passpartù project. In
February the assemblies with the workers will continue and we would like to
organize a conference in March on these issues with male and female workers as
protagonists.
