(en) France, UCL press release, 91 far-right elected representatives in Parliament, Macron accomplice (ca, de, it, fr, pt, tr)[machine translation]

Date Sat, 2 Jul 2022 09:00:19 +0300

The result of the legislative elections is clear: the RN arrives in force, the NUPES and Macron fail with an absolute majority and the abstention is record. The most shocking is obviously the score of the RN which almost triples its best result at the time of its first entry into the National Assembly in 1986. More than 90 deputies including a certain number of fascists enter parliament with the help of Macron. This massive and unprecedented presence since the establishment of the Fifth Republic is one more sign of the electoral advance of the far right, but also of the creeping fascism of the state, through the cynical tactics of a liberal camp. ready to open the dikes to stay in power. ---- A tragically historic score of uninhibited racists
The RN becomes the second political party represented in the National Assembly, ahead of France Insoumise. In 1986 and because of the establishment of a proportional share by Mitterrand in the legislative elections, the FN entered the National Assembly with 35 deputies. This maneuver by the socialist president to avoid cohabitation with the RPR (now LR) is the same implemented 36 years later by the neo-liberal camp, through his statements putting the alliance on an equal footing. electoral of the left (the NUPES) and the RN. The result is simply catastrophic. However, historical examples are not lacking to remind us that when the fascists are legitimized and reach positions of power, it is difficult to get them out. With 89 seats, the RN may have just settled permanently in state bodies, and in any case has the necessary weight to be able to impose its themes at the very heart of parliamentary debate: xenophobia, racism, authoritarianism. Indeed, he will be able to weigh against a weakened presidential camp, without a majority, always more violent, by promising to be the guarantor of order against the left that the power has striven to demonize. This is all the more likely since some of the elements of nationalist ideology were already present in the politics of the current presidential majority.

The State will finance the RN with millions of euros
For the RN, this victory pays off big, also financially. On the one hand, the number of votes obtained earns the party a fixed annual sum. On the other hand, each elected official will allow the RN to lock in relatives of the Le Pen clan, to recycle former members who are less "sortable" as parliamentary attachés. Finally, millions of euros (around 10 million per year for the RN) of public subsidies accompany the positions of deputies, normally to animate the democratic life of their constituency. While the party was devitalizing from within in recent years, some of its executives and activists had left the ship, by these results, the RN will once again be able to develop, perhaps see as never before. By passing electorally in front of the traditional party of the right, it can deprive it of the place of political springboard for the young notables of the upper classes, even if the experience of the FN/RN in the European Parliament has clearly shown that it would use it rather to line the coffers of the massively indebted party and the pockets of its leaders. But it is our money that will finance the racist exits of the members of the RN.

Liberals and extreme right, objective allies to defend capitalism
If this RN score is unexpected, it is not totally unexpected. The strategy of demonization carried out for years and well known reached a new stage during this election, when several members of the presidential majority (such as the beaten minister Amélie de Montchalin, or the former minister also beaten Christophe Castaner) put their backs on the back of the fascist threat and the "anarchists of the NUPES" who would threaten order and the Republic. Moreover, a large majority of the LREM candidates beaten in constituencies opposing RN and NUPES in the 2nd round did not express an anti-RN vote instruction, some having even maintained themselves, allowing the victory of the RN candidates in the triangular framework. The last dikes jumped in the face of fear of a victory for the left. As in every crisis situation, authoritarian liberals have shown their preference for fascism in the face of a risk of moderate control of capitalism. By their failure to respond to the problems of the moment (inflation, ecological crisis, wage increases, etc.) other than by the most authoritarian and police solutions, they have voluntarily opened the way to such a score from a fascist party.

The elections pass but the struggle continues!
We have said it and repeated it throughout the whole period and we will repeat it again: fascism is fought at the base, by the base!

As anti-fascist, anti-capitalist and revolutionary activists, we cannot rely solely on a parliamentary counterweight to confront the fascists and their ideas. The past electoral sequence, it is in the street and through the struggles that we will wage against racist policies, against fascist threats that we will push them back. It is by building a strong social movement, closer to the interests of our camp, that of the exploited and against the dominations that we suffer, that we will reduce the fascist threat. Reducing this pressure also necessarily involves direct and real engagement against all far-right groups, from the RN to the multiple fascist bands, on the ground.

This is why we call on all the organizations of the social and revolutionary left, combative trade union organizations and the social movement to invest in the field of the anti-fascist struggle and to build, locally and nationally, the tools to lead the fight effectively against the extreme right and its ideas. We call for the unity of the anti-fascist camp, because the divisions and disputes that lead us into absurd and counterproductive situations are definitely below the stakes of our time and lastingly undermine our capacities to fight. Don't let them win any longer.
