More than 800 people mobilized on May 14 in Pertuis in the Vaucluse against a

diehard Zapatatistas resists the invader again and again. This village is that of 
Pertuis, in the heart of Provence, whose mayor, Roger Pellenc, has still not 
understood that money and concrete cannot be eaten. But nearly 30 associations 
and collectives are there to remind him by fighting for almost three years 
against a project to extend an economic activity zone threatening 86 hectares of 
land. An aberration for many reasons: these places are inhabited, cultivated or 
fallow, in a humid and flood-prone area on the banks of the Durance, whose 
regular floods have shaped a particularly fertile soil. We must also mention the 
great wealth of biodiversity present on the site: of the 1,047 species listed in 
the municipality of Pertuis,

So what are the potatoes doing in there ? It's simple: potato cultivation is 
traditional in the region, and during the first big mobilization, in April 2021, 
more than 600 people went there for a massive planting on the threatened land. 
Then, from November 2021, some houses (empty following the expropriations) were 
occupied by activists: this is how the Zap, the potato zone[1]was born .

A mayor with dubious methods
Roger Pellenc, sulphurous character between mayor, businessman and feudal lord? 
This long-toothed septuagenarian is the founder of an agricultural equipment and 
machinery company that generates several hundred million euros in profits. But 
greedy and ruthless, Roger has his eye on these hectares to expand his empire. 
And when Roger wants his dough, he is ready to do anything: destroy without 
authorization the neighboring houses of the Zap (containing asbestos), tear down 
the gate and surrounding walls of the Zap with a bulldozer... Illegally and 
escorted by its municipal police !

However, the Zapatatistas (being expelled since the end of the winter break) do 
not let go: May 14 and 15 were a great weekend of mobilization around a 
hullabaloo in collaboration with the Confédération paysanne de Paca and Uprisings 
of the earth. Costumes, marching bands, plantations, farmer's market and crafts: 
more than 800 people marched against the concreting, and more than 1,500 over the 
entire weekend. This great outpouring of protest, mixing joy and anger, also 
generated a few acts of vandalism against agricultural equipment from one of 
Pellenc's showcase companies, risking weakening one of the last Zads in France, 
and its supporters. But with the fields sown, the concrete kept at a distance and 
the Zap fortified, the determination is strong not to give in!
