Subject: New NIKE Labour Email List

Announcing the Opening of
the Email Discussion List

Much attention has been focused over the last year or so, and partic-
ularly over the last few months, on the overseas manufacturing oper-
ations of US based sportswear manufacturing: much of this attention has
focused on Oregon based NIKE. NIKE, the world's largest athletic shoe
manufacturer, has pioneered the move of major sportswear manufacturers to
produce their products in repressive regimes, such as Indonesia and China,
where workers cannot organize for fair wages or better working
conditions. Even though NIKE supports professional athlete spokespersons
to the tune of millions a year, and charges over a hundred dollars for
many of their shoes, they can't see it in their hearts to pay even a
subsistence wage to those who make their products.

In answer to these explotative labour practices a movement has begun
to grow, struggling in solidarity with the workers in NIKE contracted
production facilities. The primary focus of this new list "justice-nike-
l" is to provide a forum for this new movement. Items running on this
list will include news udates, strategic discussion on organizing tactics
and successes, and action alerts. In order to subscribe to this list
