The struggle to force Crown Central Petroleum to end its lockout of 250
African American workers at its Pasadena, Texas, refinery keeps picking up
steam. A national boycott of Crown gasoline is hurting the company.
Crown's sales at gas pumps dropped 7.4 percent in the second quarter of
1999; in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, the company admitted
that the boycott "could have a materially adverse impact."

That's the idea. It's why the AFL-CIO, NAACP, National Black Caucus of
State Legislators, Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and others have
signed on to the boycott campaign. The Crown boycott got another boost in
August, when the Rev. Jesse Jackson announced that he and the Rainbow/Push
Coalition had joined.

Crown locked out the workers--members of the Paper, Allied-Industrial,
Chemical and Energy union known as PACE--in February 1996. "After the lock
out," according to the AFL-CIO, "Crown replaced union workers with
non-union contract employees and virtually eliminated African Americans
from its hourly work force."

Crown's racism goes beyond union busting. The Pasadena refinery has
contaminated the surrounding neighborhood, whose residents are mostly
impoverished Latinos. A year ago Crown was hit with the biggest
air-pollution fine in Texas history. And a 1997 lawsuit by African
American and women employees documented systematic discrimination and
mistreatment. One piece of evidence: a flier distributed by Crown
management. It was laid out as an "application" for "Jesse Jackson's Staff
Positions" and asked such questions as "length of last jail term" and
"number of convenience stores robbed."
