Dear subscribers,

the language tags are used for every post going to the news feed. They
are prepended before the subject and enclosed in parentheses like
this:

	Subject: (en) This is in English

If the main content of a post is in contained in more than one
language, all languages are listed separated by commas like this:

	Subject: (en, de) In Englisch und außerdem auch in Deutsch

Note: The presence of a language tag and the format is enforced by the
software helping this project (aka `clerk').

If the main content is available in another language(s), the
appropriate language tag(s) may be added after the subject like this:

	Subject: (en) This is available in German as well (de)

In general the `a-infos' project uses the ISO standard 639, which
lists about 140 languages of the world and assigns two letter
abbreviations to them (modified list enclosed).

We appreciate, that these abbreviations are chosen according to them
name of the language in the respective language itself, so no meta
language is used for naming. We gladly adopt the work someone did to
accomplish that.

Furthermore we think it is good to use a relative common standard for
that purpose. This way it's easier for people not used to the internal
debates of the project to understand the meaning of the language tags
without needing help, because they may know the meaning from other
contexts. That helps us to break isolation.

Though most of the abbreviations chosen seem reasonable, there may be
some, which are not acceptable by the standards set by the a-infos
project. In such a case we try to find another abbreviation, which
doesn't collide with an existing one, and takes the acceptability into
account.

In particular this is the case for the Castellano language. The
language tag `es' chosen by ISO reflects the imperialist nature of the
Spanish state, and thus is unacceptable for `a-infos'.

In deviation of the above principles, we chose `ca' as the language
tag for Castellano, though this collides with the original meaning of
Catalan. To resolve that collision, for Catalan we chose `ct', which
itself doesn't collide with any defined abbreviation. We hope, that
the Catalan speaking people will accept that change of the original
abbreviation of their language in our project.

Posts, which are of interest to the whole project (e.g. announcments
from the organizing collective) get the tag `ia', which stands for
Interlingua - though usually such posts might be in English :-( .
