(en) Canada, Collectif Emma Goldman - Against all imperialisms, solidarity with the victims of war! (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

Last Sunday (February 27), a hundred people gathered at Citizen's Square in
solidarity with the Ukrainian people who are currently suffering from the Russian
military offensive launched by Vladimir Putin. Between the slogans, the
solidarity signs, the Ukrainian flags and the speeches, this war divides even in
Chicoutimi. During an intervention, two people, including one Russian-speaking
Ukrainian, raised their voices towards each other due to divergent positions.
This event, which may seem trivial, clearly demonstrates the complexity of this
conflict. Contrary to the vision promoted by NATO where Ukraine is the good side
and Russia the bad, the reality is much more complex. A look back at a conflict
that has been going on since 2014.
From the Maidan Revolution to Russian military aggression
In 2014, part of the Ukrainian population rose up following the decision of
Viktor Yanukovych's government not to sign an association agreement with the
European Union (EU). Instead, the leaders opted for a rapprochement with Russia,
which did not go down well with many people who wanted to join the EU and the
West. This decision will lead to the fall of the Ukrainian government after an
uprising now known as the Maidan Revolution. Meanwhile in the Russian-speaking
region of Donbass, pro-Russian separatists unleashed an armed insurrection
against the new Ukrainian government and quickly proclaimed two new territorial
entities: the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic. Faced
with the situation, the Ukrainian army is sent and a conflict ensued which still
rages today. Finally, in Crimea, between the separatist demonstrations and the
coming to power of a nationalist government in Ukraine which threatens the
Russian language and culture, a referendum is organized in this predominantly
Russian-speaking peninsula. The attachment to Russia is voted by a large majority
and in March 2014, Crimea joined Russia after an agreement signed between Putin
and the leaders of the Republic. a referendum is organized in this predominantly

Neither NATO, nor Putin: no to imperialism!
For a week now, the Ukrainian people have been grappling with the military
invasion of their country by the Russian army. The Donbass war, this frozen
conflict which already has more than 14,000 victims, has taken on a whole new
dimension by spreading to the whole of Ukraine. The events began after the
recognition by the Kremlin of the independence of the self-proclaimed republics
of Lugansk and Donetsk and the invasion of Russian troops massed for months at
the border. To justify his aggression, Putin declares, among other things, that
he wants to denazify Ukraine and make this country a demilitarized neutral zone
which would no longer be a threat to Russia. Above all, the Kremlin tsar does not
want Ukraine to approach or join the European Union and possibly NATO. The
Ukrainian and Russian peoples therefore suffer from two imperialisms, that of
Moscow and the other coming from the West. The two fight for areas of influence,
territories and resources. The Ukrainian population lives under the bombs and the
Russian population will be the main victim of the economic sanctions of the West
which will destroy the economy of the largest country in the world.
As for denazifying Ukraine, it is true that the Maidan Revolution allowed the
emergence of far-right and neo-Nazi groups such as the Right Sector, Svoboda or
the Azov regiment (integrated into the National Guard of Ukraine from September
2014). However, as Russian anarchists say, you have to fight the extreme right in
Ukraine, it is undeniable, but it does not go through the Putin regime and its
bombs dropped on civilians, causing thousands of innocent deaths .es
International solidarity between peoples, not war!
Belarusian anarchist comrades wrote: "Anarchists have never welcomed wars because
they distract the population from the real problems that surround us all the
time. Instead of fighting for freedom, the population begins to discuss the
successes of advancement on the front lines. The place of international
solidarity is occupied by nationalism, which transforms brothers, sisters and
comrades into mortal enemies. There is nothing progressive about war. It is the
triumph of a misanthropic ideology of power. Now, as always, war is the business
of leaders, but it is ordinary people who die in it. In a patriotic trance, or
simply for money. ".
It is in this line that last Sunday, we demonstrated our solidarity with people
who have to flee their homes, hide in basements or subway stations to protect
themselves from artillery shells, cruise missiles and bombs dropped by Putin's
air force. And tomorrow, let's not forget that our brothers and sisters are still
under attack from Bashar al-Assad. Let's not forget the men and women of Rojava
who fought against the Islamic State and who now have to face Turkey, NATO's
second largest army. Let's not forget those families fleeing the war in Yemen, a
country still bombed by Saudi Arabia, which is buying armored vehicles from
Canada. NOT' let us not forget that hundreds of thousands of people are crammed
into refugee camps. Let us not forget the refugees who died trying to cross the
Mediterranean Sea. Let's not forget our Afghan sisters who continue to fight for
their rights at the risk of their lives. They don't need to be saved, they need
to be heard and supported. Let us not forget that Palestine is still under
occupation by the Tsahal, that Israel, that great friend of the West, continues
to build illegal settlements in occupied territory and to impose an apartheid
regime on the Palestinian people. let's not forget our Afghan sisters who
continue to fight for their rights at the risk of their lives. They don't need to

Let's fight against all forms of imperialism whether they come from Moscow or
from NATO!
Let's fight against militarism and its deadly logic!
On their wars, let us impose international solidarity between peoples, workers,
women and all the oppressed!
