(en) Greece, Libertatia collective APO: Call to a microphone gathering due to the catastrophic fires [machine translation]

Date Fri, 3 Sep 2021 09:49:45 +0300

Invitation of Libertatia to a microphone gathering, on Monday 30/8 at 19.00 in Kamara due to the catastrophic fires of the last period. ---- This summer we witnessed another major natural disaster due to fires that burned in many parts of the country, such as -mainly northern- Evia, northeastern Attica, Messinia, Arcadia, Fokida, Ilia and other places. In total, more than one million acres were burned this year, with incalculable damage to forest areas, the flora and fauna of these areas as well as to the productive activities of their inhabitants. ---- This gloomy treaty showed both the indifference of the state administration to the defense and protection of the natural environment and the priorities of capital and investment plans, while dispelling the myth of a "staff state" in the eyes of the people. On the one hand, a huge communication micropolitical game was set up around the so-called protection of human life - forgetting the dead that really existed - and on the other hand, the will of capital to take advantage of the disaster that existed through various investment plans that will have serious consequences for the environment, such as the installation of wind turbines. The recent enactment of the anti-environmental law that intensifies the looting of nature by state and capital, as well as the announcements for private initiatives around the part of reforestation and statements such as "not all forests have the same value" show the real priorities and dispositions of the state management. The miserable political game that was set up behind the backs of the fire victims and the alleged raising of awareness of former administrators of power, such as SYRIZA, is as empty of content as the promises of compensation to the fire victims and reforestation of the burned areas. The narrative of a "staff state" that collapsed like a paper tower with the outbreak of fires, which highlighted the shortcomings of the fire brigade and the priorities of the state, at a time when the rulers were hidden, fearing the popular indignation.

As for the various theories about arson, etc., we know clearly that a large part of the fires are due to arson, which obviously have as a greater motive the attempt to exploit the areas that will be burned for private, financial interest. The various announcements of "green growth" and the efforts to exploit nature through "friendly" energy sources, such as wind turbines, have huge costs for the natural environment and cause irreparable damage. After all, it is not a few times that various investment projects have sprung up from the burned areas.

But through all this difficult situation emerged social solidarity and mutual aid to the people affected by the destructive rage of the fires and the criminal indifference of the state. A solidarity that manifested itself in various ways, with collections of basic necessities, with solidarity movements on the street, with a physical presence on the fiery fronts to help the work of extinguishing. Equally important are the elements of self-organization that emerged from local communities in a state of abandonment in the face of a major catastrophe. Now that the spotlight is on the affected areas, it is time for the residents to step up their demands for immediate flood control and natural reforestation by the people who know and work in these forests.
