(en) France, UCL AL #315 = Vaccines, Opening up patents is good for your health (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

Date Mon, 24 May 2021 10:23:37 +0300

With competition between laboratories, highly selective supply and the stagnation of the vaccination campaign, attention is focused on the issue of private ownership of the medical knowledge necessary for the production of vaccines. Capitalism forbids a more rational pooling of knowledge. It is, however, a necessity. ---- The SARS-COV2 crisis has exposed the contradictions of the pharmaceutical industry. Behind huge profits [1], they are veritable financial machines driven by the endless greed of their shareholders who enrich themselves on illnesses. Vaccines are a real windfall for labs that protect them from competition with multiple patents. According to them, this would be the only way to make the cost of research profitable.

This capitalist logic, which would like research and development to be motivated only by greed and profitability, applies to the detriment of everyone's health. It makes treatments and vaccines difficult to access to the greatest number to the point of causing shortages and exacerbating an already catastrophic health crisis.

Innovation versus progress
The bourgeois media glorified private research when the first SARS-COV2 vaccines were announced. Indeed, the speed with which they were produced, tested and brought to market is unparalleled in the history of pharmaceuticals. But what they forget to specify is that this innovation would not have been possible without the colossal sums injected by the States[2]nor the fundamental public and open research.

Innovation is just a pretext. It serves to legitimize a financial system which, once completely deregulated as in the United States of America, wreaks havoc on the population[3]. Public research has only lost budgets and posts, and the logic of competition and profitability has prevailed everywhere. This model tends to focus only on what is profitable in the short term, leaving aside more fundamental research which does not always produce directly usable results.

Requisition, socialization
And the working conditions for the employees of the labs are deplorable: job blackmail, relocations ... Sanofi is an example of this greed. Despite the health crisis and the vaccine shortage, the company continues to cut jobs! [4]

The organizations of the social and trade union movement have mobilized to demand the end of this system of privatization which only benefits the shareholders of the labs (see below). This petition is a first step towards real consideration of the current health emergency. Beyond these measures, the entire pharmaceutical production system must be rethought from the ground up. Factories must be requisitioned and socialized under the control of workers in order to put an end to the fierce competition that legitimizes relocations and the deterioration of working conditions. Massive investment in public and open fundamental research, decorrelated from profitability and profit,

All the needs must be clearly identified, by means of advice composed of professionals and users of the pharmaceutical industry, in order to orient and organize production to cover them as well as possible. Let us abandon the logic of profit and profitability, make everyone's health a priority in order to live better, in good health and collectively reclaim the fruit of pharmaceutical research and production!
