(en) Czech, AFED: Report from the second public event of the Stop Covid initiative together and fairly [machine translation]

Date Thu, 25 Mar 2021 10:02:44 +0200

In response to the scandalous remarks of the Minister of Industry and Trade Karel Havlícek, which appeared on the program Máte slovo, aired on March 11, the initiative Stop the covid together and fairly , supported by more than 500 people, signed its second public event. (informed HERE https://www.afed.cz/text/7321/chranme-zivoty-zastavme-prumysl). ---- On Tuesday, March 16, at 5 pm, a few dozen people gathered in front of the building of the Ministry of Industry and Trade to reject Minister Havlícek's argument that industrial enterprises could not be closed temporarily so that the state would not lose control of employees. There was a petition booth again, and people came to light candles until seven o'clock to express their condolences to all those who had died of covid-19, as the government could not handle the pandemic. This time the event went without the presence of the police, if we do not count one police car around the corner. Unlike the previous event in front of the government office in the ministry building, there was someone else, the employees went out and got to know the purpose of the event - at least through large banners proclaiming "Let's protect lives, stop industry" and "Patents are killing." Vaccines for everyone! "

At the beginning, there was a 20-minute block of speeches, initiated by Jan Májícek, a spokesman for the initiative, to say why the initiative arose, that the government continued to fail to address the coronavirus crisis, and condemned the Minister of Industry's statement that they ran uncontrollably through the streets, spreading the virus.

In his speech, the signatory of the initiative, Jan Cerný, drew attention to the fact that the closure of the industry is the last, but a key measure, which has not yet been taken. Experts also point out that without this step, all measures are insufficient. Due to the government chaos, the Czech Republic has long been at the top of the world in terms of population per capita. And the government? It simply ignores the challenges of experts, as they do not correspond to its own interests associated with large industry. In the program You have the floor, Minister Havlícek rejected the request for a temporary cessation of industry (with the exception of critical infrastructure) and confirmed it. His concept of fighting the pandemic completely denied democratic principles and rather recalled the project of corporate authoritarianism, which would make the Czech Republic one large labor camp. It identifies the industry as the bearer of an ideal solution to a pandemic situation where people can be tested. The state needs to keep people in industrial enterprises so that it can control them effectively. His way of fighting a pandemic is therefore a kind of system of forced labor, because the company has a clear hierarchy and obedience to superiors. The resignation of the minister must be demanded. In addition, he has a bigger say in the government when it comes to fighting a pandemic than, for example, the Minister of Health. (You can read the critique of Havlícek's attitudes by Jan Cerný in more detailHERE .)

Another spokesperson for the Stop the Cvid initiative together and fairly Michaela Hadravová said that the initiative also arose from the feeling that there is no force in the media and public space to oppose the statements of industry representatives and the minister defending their interests. It presented five requirements for the initiative, focusing specifically on the fifth, which concerns vaccination and the fair distribution of vaccines. Vaccination has been inexcusably prolonged and the government is failing again. Large companies that have patents on vaccines are failing to meet their obligations. We should demand the suspension of patents. Vaccines cannot remain the prerogative of rich countries - after all, the 10 richest countries administer 70% of all vaccines.
