(en) Greece, APO: A spark from a cell spread like wildfire throughout society. Dimitris Koufontinas won! [machine translation]

Date Thu, 25 Mar 2021 09:58:39 +0200

"Today, in the face of the onslaught of neoliberal totalitarianism, society may still be numb but the whole is boiling . He hates the rulers and bigger and bigger pieces are looking for Exits and answers ... " -- D.Koufontinas ----- On March 14, the revolutionary communist D. Koufontinas ended his hunger strike after 65 days of resistance. Although his request for transfer to Korydallos was not accepted, the cinematic and social dynamics expressed on the occasion of the hunger strike far exceeded the request itself. The ND government had made its intentions clear from the beginning, seeking his death. This was expressed through the circumvention and occasional diversion of legal and constitutional institutions and was accompanied by the strengthening of the police state. By repealing the laws themselves, the government's efforts to silence this struggle clearly show a desperate person. Nevertheless, social and political contradictions, that emerged through this struggle led to the strengthening of the competitive movement around its just struggle. Thus, this struggle was characterized by constant victories over a state apparatus, which is folding, avenging militants and serving the international neoliberal policies. That is why the fight is considered victorious.

Solidarity in the person of D. Koufontinas was expressed in many ways against the generalized emphasis, which is constantly intensified by the government. Through the pan-Hellenic days of solidarity, the interventions in the American embassy, the symbolic occupation of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Culture, the march to the headquarters of ND, the marches of thousands of protesters, who were invited by lawyers and organizations of the wider competing We also called on the solidarity movement, despite the bans and the attempt to impose fear, to stand up against the doctrine of zero tolerance. Hundreds of actions (at least 400), interventions and squatting, throughout Greece (such as the occupation of the labor center in Thessaloniki and the occupation of the ND offices in Patras) and abroad (such as the occupation of the Greek consulate in Berlin) in conjunction with the mobilizations of political prisoners and the 30-day hunger strike in solidarity with D, Koufontina by the imprisoned comrades N. Maziotis and G. Dimitraki, proved that practical solidarity knows no borders or barriers. The revenge in the face of D. Koufontina and the extreme repression of all solidarity actions fell into the void.

As a movement we do not speak in terms of victory and defeat, as perceived by bourgeois domination. D. Koufontinas has defeated the state mechanism, because he fights consistently despite 20 years of confinement. A prisoner of bourgeois democracy and an unrepentant revolutionary, he laid his body on the wall of state terrorism. The hunger strike of D. Koufontinas united the movement in its most difficult time. Because right now, in the midst of a pandemic, the most aggressive social and class war is raging. Pandemic mitigation measures have nothing to do with public health. On the contrary, the state mechanism under the pretext of covid 19 seems to be shielded in order to prevent a social uprising. At this juncture, we see the media, as genuine spokespersons, covering up the government. To make propaganda of the manipulative kind by disorienting the oppressed and the oppressed by their interests. The political system, through the manipulated media and the correspondingly controlled social media, constantly spreads false news, censors every opposing point of view, calls cinematic antibiotic terrorism, concealing its crimes and claiming its monopoly.

To every problem that arises, the answer is the most policing of the population. This is precisely the condition for the emergence of a totalitarianism. A condition of class aggression, imposed through the police and the violence of the puppets of the repressive groups, who bully, attack and torture anyone who resists. This fact becomes clear when one looks at the countless incidents that have taken place in the last two months, such as the attacks with MAT, auras and action in all the marches of solidarity with the hunger striker, arrests and extraditions culminating in the brutal beating in Nea Smyrni, because he defended a family that protested against the unjust imposition of a fine.

They accused Koufontinas of asking for special treatment. There is no greater hypocrisy. There is special treatment but to the detriment of political prisoners, through the regime of exemption and the imminent threat of type C prisons, which in essence are going to establish themselves as an informal regime in Domokos. They want to wipe out their political opponents from history because they tremble at the meanings that are concentrated on their faces. Anyone who does not understand the importance of this hunger strike does not understand that the attitude of the state towards its "worst enemy" is the one that will be applied to those who will resist in the future. The greatest resistances under the most adverse conditions are those that give space to the movements to exist.

What started and took place during the hunger strike and culminated in the ongoing demonstrations against police violence, are a guide for the struggles that follow. The choice of Dimitris Koufontinas to go on a hunger strike in this difficult time was justified because through the social dynamics that was expressed, the way was opened for the struggle against state and capital. If something happens to the partner's health, Sakellaropoulou, Mitsotakis, Chrysochoidis, Nikolaou and the American embassy remain responsible. By keeping the legacy of this struggle we will continue to resist the social and class aggression we are accepting. The end of the hunger strike, embraced by all the struggling sections of society, finds us all on the road and with comrade D.

PS: This text is a first signal of solidarity with comrade D. Koufontina, who stopped the hunger strike after 65 days. A detailed text of the report from the Solidarity Assembly will follow.
