(en) France, UCL AL #316 - Culture, Read: "Les Utopiques" magazine: the Paris Commune: memories, horizons (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 13 Jun 2021 09:47:36 +0300

Les Utopiques is a trade union magazine published by Solidaires. The writings that compose it are the work of activists. And now the number 16, published last March, returns to ... the Municipality! ---- This notebook of reflections from the review Les Utopiques, devoted to the Paris Commune is anything but a notebook. It is a sum ; a sum of reflections, of crossed glances, female and male, on what was the Commune of Paris and on the questions which were his and cross our histories. ---- Bring the Municipality or rather the Municipalities to life... To draw out all the wealth and all the mistakes, without becoming the givers of lessons with peremptory remarks ; avoid the war of memories, the trap of memory grabbers. "The memory of the Municipality needs to be expressed, even today, the diversity of its readings, that we highlight the multiplicity of possibilities that the inaugural act made it possible to open." (Roger Martelli)

A very complete panorama
The memory of the Municipality is not the legendary work of great characters, of exceptional activists. The memory of the Municipality ; this terminology is inappropriate ... To say "memories", in the plural, seems more adequate. Memories of this people, far from militant clichés, of these workers who weaved these stories, these meetings. Memories of an abundance of institutions, of various groups that crossed this Paris of the time ... Memories of lives.

This is what Les Utopiques wanted to take up . Many themes are discussed: public services, women's work, without forgetting the women themselves, school work, secularism, the military question, colonialism but also the Municipalities of Lyon, Nîmes, Marseille . We also immerse ourselves in questions such as that of the minority and the majority in the Commune, or the recurring one of the Banque de France. There will also be a chronology of these seventy-two days so teeming with lives, dreams, realities and suffering.

But the Commune is not only a French work, it wanted to be cosmopolitan and its impact went beyond, and still goes beyond the borders of France. The power of the time was not mistaken as we see it by going through the scathing of the time, the infamous caricatures or the writings of the most acclaimed writers of the time.

As if to counterbalance, Les Utopiques offers us quality iconography and a hopeful look through songs, comics and a cover worthy of the commoners. Come on, we end with the classic: the Municipality is not dead ! Thank you for keeping it alive.
