(en) France, UCL AL #317 - Ecology, The uprisings of the earth: restoring our commons (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

The campaign of actions and blockades of the uprisings of the earth launched at the end of January from the Zad of Notre-Dame-des-Landes stems from a desire to coordinate existing struggles against useless projects and to stimulate new ones. It places at the center of ecological struggles the need to oppose private property in order to collectively regain decision-making power over land management. ---- In January, 200 people involved in ecological struggle collectives across French territory gathered on the Zad of Notre-Dame-des-Landes. Fighting locally, sometimes for decades, to defend their neighborhoods, their villages, their fields, their forests, their rivers, their future and that of living things as a whole, against useless, harmful and imposed projects, they found around common observations. And faced with the need to coordinate their struggles to establish a greater balance of power, they decided to launch an appeal to occupy the land and block the industries that "devour the soil": the uprisings of the earth [1].

Resonate the struggles for the land
The first phase of this campaign of actions took place this spring through various pre-existing local struggles. March 27 at Vaites in Besançon to defend self-managed popular gardens against the construction of 1,800 new homes in a city with a stagnant population and many vacant homes. April 10 and 11 at La Prévalaye in Rennes to collectively cultivate land regularly used as " ecological compensation" for the metropolitan areas and including the " artificateurs", supported by the "social-environmentalist" majority. Would now like to make a sanitized leisure park and a showcase for urban agriculture while awaiting the next stage of metropolitanization of this vast wetland and expansion of flooding.

May 22 and 23 in Haute-Loire, where 29 farms and 20 hectares of wetlands are threatened by a deviation intended to make the Lyon-Toulouse road axis more fluid [2], while the land targeted by the project is precious. A fragmented plot and rich soils making it possible to shelter a diverse fauna and flora and conducive to a polyculture agriculture autonomous breeding by input, thus guaranteeing current and future food security.

It will also be on June 19, 20 and 21 in Saint-Colombau in Loire-Atlantique to defend the grove threatened by sand quarries and industrial market gardening. This will end on July 3 and 4 with a large festive gathering in Île-de-France which will take place following a first week of blockages targeting the construction industry of Greater Paris. A foretaste of the second phase of actions planned for this fall.

Land ecology
This campaign, imagined by a large group of people from farms, Zad, peasant unions and environmental collectives, aims to "land" the current struggles. It places at the center of ecology the question of ownership and the mode of land management while, in recent years, the awareness around the dangers of climate change, the alarming loss of biodiversity and the need to to act in favor of a change of "system", more concerned the planet.

In fact, despite the strong mobilizations during the recent climate marches, which have brought together tens of thousands of people, the organization of ecological struggles can neither be done at a conceptual level, above ground and above scale, nor without opposing a real balance of power to the State, its institutions and the capitalist model they defend.

Thus, the signatories of the appeal, by posing the land question as a major issue in the struggle and situated "at the crossroads of the end of the world and the end of the month" , remind us that, within ten years, this 'is a third of the surface of the French territory which will change hands following the retirement of many farmers but also that the State and its institutions leave the field free to the merchant ravages of the land by organizing itself the bypassing of land and environmental regulations that it has instituted.

They propose to us to stimulate and invent new resistances having for point of attachment, for means and for end the collective recovery of the land, in town as in the countryside, by the peasant installation, the purchase in common or the 'occupation. Guaranteeing popular access to land, wresting it from capitalist exploitation and constituting "liberated spaces" opens up the prospect of a multiplicity of common uses to make it possible to take care of soils, humans and the living that surrounds us: "Land is not capital. It is the living, the landscape and the seasons. It is the world we inhabit on the verge of being swallowed up by extractivist voracity" .

Finally, in addition to the creation of an archipelago of struggle constituting a network of inter-regional counter-power, the call for the uprisings of the earth urges us to target and directly block the industries responsible for the destruction of the soil: those of the concrete, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, and to seize places of power where the allocation, use and destination of land is decided without us: among planners, political institutions, the FNSEA ... A march to the doors of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food is thus planned for the opening of the second season of the earth's uprisings in September.

A movement to strengthen
If as libertarian communists we can rejoice in the creation of a network of resolutely anti-capitalist ecological counter-power, denouncing greenwashing and the social injustices of access to land, our support cannot do without a critical look. on this fight, the success of which will depend on its capacity to mobilize massively, to form alliances and to guarantee democratic self-management of these new commons.

The questioning of private property must remain a central issue, but the distinction between the occupation of agricultural land to be preserved from urbanization and that of land to be preserved from human activity whatsoever should not either. to be neglected. Finally, it is regrettable that for the moment the uprisings of the earth seem to concern only already existing struggles, it is up to us to strengthen the movement, expand alliances and make the creation of these new commons accessible to the most precarious of people. between us.
