(en) Preserving the memory of Stuart Christie. Funding drive to create a memorial archive in London (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

Date Sun, 28 Feb 2021 09:23:16 +0200

The life of activist and writer Stuart Christie was always full of headlines. "Britain's most famous anarchist" and "the Scottish anarchist who tried to kill Franco in 1964" were his most common descriptions; But the important thing, as always, was what was in the fine print: his courage, his imagination, his loyalty, not only to his beliefs, but to his friends and family, his remarkable intelligence, and his self-deprecating, stinging humor were what that characterized her. ---- Sadly, on August 15, Stuart left us forever . To keep the memory of the many stories she was part of, a group of friends, colleagues and family members have set out to create a Memorial Archive in her name at the headquarters of the May Day Rooms (an archive space and meeting place for social movements and antagonists) of Fleet Street, London. The archive will include photographs, letters, personal memories, works of art, his writings, all the works produced by his publishers ( Cienfuegos Press and Christie Books ) and his well-known Anarquista Audiovisual Archive.

Much of the material will see the light of day for the first time, such as the letters he wrote from Carabanchel prison after his failed attempt to assassinate Franco, as well as photographs from his childhood. The memorial will also address other, more unknown moments in his life, such as his role as a defendant without evidence in the Angry Brigade trial or the time when he lived in the remote Orkney Islands (north of Scotland) and published a newspaper (the Free- Winged Eagle ) with unpublished images, compiled by his daughter, Branwen.

To finance the creation of this file, Stuart's colleagues have started a crowdfunding campaign (online micro-donations) on the GoFundMe website . Anyone who is willing and able can contribute any amount of money. The money that is collected will not only be used to rent the physical space that the project occupies and hire the archivist Jessica Thorne (a doctoral researcher, whose work focuses on anarchist prisoners in Franco's Spain) to mount it, but It will also be used to digitize all of its content and make it accessible to everyone on the internet. It will also be used to reissue his autobiography ( My grandmother made me an anarchist , a more extensive work thanFranco made me a terrorist , the version published in Spain) and his novels trilogy Pistoleros!: The Chronicles of Faquhar McHarg . In addition, some talks and informative events about his figure will be organized and, depending on the amount of panicle collected, a physical monument to Stuart will be installed. A stained glass window is currently being designed that will be placed in the May Day Rooms and, as these do not abound in secular art - and much less in anarchist art - we would love to see it, so we encourage you to loosen your fly.

Finally, if crowdfunding exceeds its maximum funding goals, the organizers will meet to decide how to expand the project even further or, alternatively, reallocate those funds to prisoner support groups and / or libertarian outreach projects.

The news that arise around the project will be published on your Facebook page and on your Twitter account (both in English)
