(en) Czech, Ostrava Anarchist Federation oafed: 10 years since the founding of Real Democracy Ostrava [Traduction automatique]

Date Mon, 9 Aug 2021 10:42:00 +0300

In June 2011, the tenth anniversary of the global anti-capitalist movement Real Democracy reached Ostrava and gave rise to a local branch. ---- The Spanish movement Democracia Real Ya in 2011 became a kind of western continuation of the Arab Spring. Even in capitalist countries, people suddenly began to call for freedom, solidarity and, most importantly, justice. The rich and the bankers suddenly did not bear any responsibility for the current economic crisis, and its burden was to be borne by those who did not cause it. In Iceland, however, they have shown that it is different. The nationwide uprising ensured that Icelandic workers maintained their dignity and forced the government to resign.

The movement reached the Czech Republic in May 2011, and following the example of Spain, plenums and assemblies spontaneously began to form in the squares, where people discussed how to fight the cuts and how to build a real democracy. In addition to Prague and Ceské Budejovice, the meetings were also held in Ostrava, with a surprisingly high turnout. Although the rallies were not significantly promoted and publicized in advance, about 50 people arrived at the first, and about thirty at the others. Workers, pensioners, the unemployed and students met, and representatives of different generations discussed. The promotion of political parties was strictly forbidden.

Several working groups were set up very quickly, dealing with sub-topics - corruption, non-compliance with the law by public authorities, government reforms and air quality in the Ostrava region. There was also an organizational group that always arranged the following meetings. Although the movement gradually weakened, Real Democracy was a great impetus for meeting people with the same class interests and coordinating mutual activities (for example, between anarchists and trade unions). Thanks to the rallies, many first encountered the ideas of anarchism and direct action, and some later participated in the Occcupy movement or supported the Awaken Houses initiative.
