(en) Poland, rozbrat: POLITICAL LEAFLETS ARE RUBBISH FOR THE POLICE - ANOTHER ABSURD FORM OF REPRESSION. by Anarchist Black Cross [Traduction automatique]

Date Sun, 8 Aug 2021 09:59:11 +0300

On October 24, 2020, another in a series of political actions took place as part of a protest related to the tightening of abortion law. This time, activists associated with the feminist and anarchist milieu undertook the symbolic opening of an abortion clinic. The peaceful protest was a form of a happening, a dozen or so people symbolically took over the abandoned hospital building at Szkolna Street. From the windows of the building, banners were hung - on the first one the inscription: "You have a choice - you will never be alone". The second depicts Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the president of PiS, with the signature: "You don't need their consent." On the third, the text "Abortion Clinic" and the website address and telephone number at which women can obtain information and assistance in having an abortion.

During the protest, flares were fired and the content of the leaflet distributed to passers-by was read. The whole event would have gone smoothly had it not been for the bizarre behavior of the police. Officers decided to detain one of the men involved in the protest after he had left a leaflet behind the car's wiper. A dozen or so policemen violently knocked the man down and dragged him to the police car. Even then, the behavior of the policemen aroused resistance and protests from both participants and journalists.

The provocative behavior of the police and the intervention undertaken was completely unnecessary, after nearly a year it turns out that, unfortunately, it has further consequences. The arrested man was Artur, a participant in the anarchist movement, then associated with the Poznan Anarchist Federation and the Rozbrat squat. The following interview aims to highlight further repression that happened to Artur after the above-mentioned protest

A few days ago, the police showed up at your place of residence. What did they come to see you with?

Around 9 a.m. a policewoman appeared at my door, I was informed by her that I was accused of littering and not following the officer's orders. It was supposed to take place on October 24 - during a protest organized by "W Naszej Sprawie" in front of the hospital. These accusations refer to the information leaflet that I put on the glass of the police car.

What is worth mentioning is that this is not your registration address, which was given after you were detained in October last year, but a place where you are temporarily staying. So once again the police force used its powers and resources to locate the whereabouts of a "dangerous criminal". Does your sense of security increase that the government is devoting so much energy to pursuing a person accused of a misdemeanor?

It amuses me, I think it is an extremely frivolous situation. So our country, by funding fascist organizations from our taxes, is also pursuing anarchist activists for putting leaflets on police cars using inadequately exaggerated methods.

What was the questioning like, did the police apply any pressure to "plead guilty" or were you properly instructed as to your rights?

I cannot have any accusations here, I was instructed, I was not required to plead guilty.

You will most likely be sentenced to order, and in the event of an appeal, a court case. Do you think that this form of prosecution as an allegedly minor offense can already be considered some form of repression? Ultimately, you are visited by the police, forcing you to come to the hearing, you have to wait for correspondence from the court and somehow be ready for further moves from the "judiciary".

Any form of punishment for protest and political activity is a form of repression. Besides, the vast majority of police actions aimed at citizens, this is what they are, with repression. In this case, I will be punished for not agreeing to take away my girlfriends, mother, girlfriend or any woman or person with a vagina in this country. Although the allegations are not big, the situation is intended to make me feel uncomfortable, to remind me that I am not free and that I am dependent on the "good" will of the system's beats.

We will definitely monitor further actions in your case and provide you with all the necessary support. Do you think that participating in the protest was a mistake that unnecessarily exposed you to reprisals? Do you want to add something at the end?

It seems that everything has been cleared up at this point. I am proud to express my views out loud, and I will always do so. The worst thing I can do in this case is to get stifled and silenced by people who want the protests in Poland to be inaudible and marginal. My view on this protest has not changed, any person who wants to have an abortion should be able to do so. In good conditions, not far from his place of residence, so that everyone could afford such a procedure that even the most excluded people had such an opportunity. We must not be afraid of repression if we want to fight for a better world.
