(en) [Basque Country] "Libertarian communism is a real political alternative to any variety of capitalism" By ANA (ca, pt)

* The CNT pays tribute in Artxanda to the revolutionaries of 1936. ---- * We all remember the Durrutis, the Montsenys, but it's the ant work, day after day, with the people in the neighborhood, with the people at work, that made anarcho-syndicalism a useful tool", was pointed out ahead from La Huella. ---- About forty people participated in the tribute that the anarcho-syndicalist central organizes every July 19 in Artxanda (Bilbao). This year an offering of flowers was held and a CNT activist, Endika Alabort, dedicated a few words to the men and women who stopped fascism in 1936. ---- In the following lines we collect what was said in front of La Huella , which Irola Irratia recorded in audio (available on her Telegram channel) and also uploaded to youtube ( youtube.com/watch?v=piHZOYL8IHY ).

This July 19th marks the 85th anniversary of the Social Revolution of 1936. The last great revolution in the West, which set an example for current social transformations like that of Rojava, which also began on July 19th.

Humble men and women and workers who suffered daily misery, common people, managed to defeat a coup d'état, and fought against a professional army with decades of experience in massacring people like the Moroccan, putting an end to workers' mobilizations, and which had the support the totality of fascist dictatorships and Western democracies. But what began on July 19, 1936 was more than the Civil War, it was the great social and economic transformation, the Social Revolution. The workers, based on self-management, collectivized fields and factories, managed them. They showed that it is possible to function without capitalists, who are the workers who create wealth. They fulfilled the objective that syndicalism must have, if it is revolutionary: to make the economy work without exploitation and exploiters.

This did not happen spontaneously. Decades of work, spreading libertarian ideas, bringing anarchism under the ivory tower and turning it into a real political alternative, creating a world of workers parallel to the bourgeois. And with regard to the CNT, bringing the working masses closer to anarcho-syndicalism, being a useful tool for the working class. We all remember the Durrutis, the Montsenys, but it's the ant work, day after day, with the people in the neighborhood, with the people at work, that made anarcho-syndicalism a useful tool and libertarian communism a real political alternative to any variety of capitalism.

Today, if we told anyone that the alternative to capitalism was just around the corner, we would be branded alienated. It's a different society, the working class is not the same, and the problems we face have changed. However, it is important to remember dates like these. Not to romanticize the past, not to put this generation on a pedestal or make it holy: our goal must be to build a future, not to recreate the past. This generation showed us that it is possible to live without capitalism, in self-management, with equality and without exploitation. We must rescue the successes and put aside the mistakes of 1936.

Even more so when capitalism goes astray, destroying everything it touches: more wars and violence, accelerated climate crisis, commodification of all aspects of life... What they are putting on the table is eco-fascism, an authoritarian way out to have everything tied up and well tied. Bourgeois democracies are no longer sufficient for them. If we look at the Kingdom of Spain, the Regime of 78 is still reeling, and the parliamentary alternatives have been co-opted. This leaves us with a decade ahead that will be critical not just for the working class, but for sustaining life in a dignified way. That's why we have to insist on the organization of the working class, in the world of work and in the neighborhoods and villages.

These are all the reasons why we are here today, why we must remember those working men and women who, in the face of the most bloodthirsty fascism, faced it, yes, but also built and set in motion a new world. I end with a quote from Durruti, repeated a thousand times, but no less valid for this:

" The ruins don't scare us. We know that we will only inherit ruins, because the bourgeoisie will try to ruin the world in the last phase of its history. But we are not afraid of ruins because we carry a new world in our hearts. And this world is growing right now ."
