(en) Canada, Collectif Emma Goldman - London, Ontario: Railroad blockade against arms sale to Saudi Arabia (ca, de, it, fr, pt)[machine translation]

Date Tue, 6 Apr 2021 10:07:44 +0300

On March 26, members of the anti-war organizations World BEYOND War , Labor Against the Arms Trade and People for Peace London blocked a railway line near the plant of General Dynamics Land Systems-Canada , a company located in the vicinity. of London, Ontario, which manufactures light armored vehicles for Saudi Arabia. This action aims to put pressure on General Dynamics so that the company ceases to be complicit in Saudi Arabia's military intervention in Yemen by providing them with war material. The activists also call on the Canadian government to put an end to the export of arms to Saudi Arabia and to increase humanitarian aid to the people of Yemen.
March 26 marks the 6th year of the Yemeni civil war in which Saudi Arabia (backed by the West) intervenes brutally, plunging nearly 80% of the population, or 24 million people, into a situation of humanitarian crisis. . The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia imposes a sea, land and air blockade on Yemen, preventing the importation of food, medical equipment, gasoline and commercial goods. According to the UN World Food Program, 50,000 Yemenis are living in a situation of famine and 5 million are on the verge of being so. In addition, Yemen is struggling with one of the worst death rates linked to COVID-19. One in four people who have tested positive die from it. Despite all of this, Canada continues to sell arms to Saudi Arabia. In 2019, Canada exported for 2,General Dynamics supplies the majority of military materiel sent to Saudi Arabia via its armored vehicles which are transported by trains and trucks to Canadian ports to be loaded onto Saudi cargo ships. Let us recall that the Canadian government signed an agreement of more than 13 billion dollars with Saudi Arabia for the delivery of armored vehicles manufactured by General Dynamics .

Those present at the blockade are calling on the Canadian government to stop investing in the military industry and injecting this money into sectors such as green public transit that can create good jobs for Canadians. The government must also ensure and subsidize the transition and retraining of workers in arms factories to jobs that will not violate human rights.
