(en) US, Claremont Solidarity* open meeting

Date Thu, 22 Apr 2010 09:18:50 +0300

Since March 1st, the dining hall workers at Pomona College have been engaged in a struggle with the administration to establish an independent union on campus. Since going public a month and a half ago with the support of 90% of the workforce, the workers have held rallies with hundreds of students, won a public debate with the vice president of the College, staged break-time walkouts and continued to organize in the dining halls. In an effort both to bring more diversity and engage more potential allies to the efforts to organize students and pressure the administration, and to prepare a strong foundation for summer organizing, when most students will be gone, Claremont Solidarity is announcing a new anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian organizing initiative in.

While we as students have been involved in this struggle since the very beginning (and even long before), we believe that is necessary to begin organizing with supporters outside of the college walls and to organize specifically as anti-capitalists and anti-authoritarians. With the collaboration of students, workers and community members, we will organize and agitate for the recognition of the union within the context of class struggle and the corporatization of the university.

Claremont Solidarity is hosting a meeting this Tuesday between students who are already active in the unionization struggle, students who may not previously have seen a place for themselves in the struggle, a few delegates from the worker organizing committee, and community organizers. We will discuss our broad strategy, what we should plan for the few weeks left in the semester and how we will organize over the summer. The meeting will be held Tuesday in Memorial Park on the corner of Indian Hill and 8th in Claremont at 8:30.

Please come participate, and spread the word among your comrades. The support of non-Claremont organizers will be particularly needed in a month when the semester ends and most students leave Claremont.

About Claremont Solidarity

Claremont Solidarity exists to push the university struggle to its limits. We exist to realize the student-worker controlled university here in Claremont.

We are specifically active in the struggle of the Pomona College food service workers to organize an independent union. We advocate for and act out an anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian perspective in this struggle. We do this in close solidarity with the workers and will never tolerate the emergence of any vanguardist tendency that seeks to lead the workers in their own struggle.
