AN EMPTY STOMACH IS AS PAINFUL AS A PUNCH IN THE STOMACH --- Mel Cooke
"Food Not Bombs" made it's debut in St. Petersburg today, 24th January 2005.
Just outside Vladimirskaya metro station at 3pm, about 7 FNB helpers and many
more hungry folks gathered to satiate their appetites in an (unfortunately)
unusual way - for free! A delicious and hot vegan stew with fresh bread was
served, and eaten all up, in record time. Next time we will have to make more!
Today's serving was just the first of what will be a monthly occasion, happening
at 2pm on the last Sunday of each month at Vladimirskaya square. Flyers were
given to diners and passers-by to inform them about the ideas behind FNB,
creating some interesting discussions between the diners.
Unfortunately, dumpster-diving for fresh food is not really an available
option in Russia. Firstly because fresh fruit and vegetables are not
plentiful and thus are quickly bought, and secondly, because those not
bought stay on the shelf until rotten. Therefore, at the moment, all food
for FNB must be bought. Funds are raised via punk/hardcore shows and kind
donations. Meals are cooked in our own humble kitchens.
While Putin's government is increasing spending on "anti-terror" measures,
millions of Russians are still going hungry. Starvation is a violent and
terrifying state, and undoubtedly affects more Russians than so-called
"terrorism" (aka. violence not sanctioned by the state). Until there are
fundamental changes made to this system which perpetuates poverty,
homelessness and starvation, ventures such as FNB (albeit a small
contribution) are sorely needed.
