Lexington Commonwealth's Attorneys
Lexington Mayor Teresa Isaac

I am writing to you because I am concerned by the viscous
prosecutorial attacks upon protesters arrested during a
demonstration that occurred in your city on January 20th, 2005.
These completely peaceful, unarmed demonstrators were not only
brutally attacked by Lexington Police Officers with electric tazer
weapons and chemical irritants but now find themselves facing
criminal charges and jail time for little more that voicing their own
opinion. I am appalled to know that the city government in
Lexington is openly and actively attacking activists and the long
standing tradition of protest in this country. I therefore am
requesting that ALL CHARGES BE DROPPED against activists
arrested during the protests against the presidential inauguration on
January 20th, 2005 in Lexington.

On January 20th over 50 people gathered in Lexington, KY to
protest the second inauguration of George W. Bush. They were
among thousands globally protesting against the domestic and
international agenda of militarization that the Bush administration
and US policy represents. Their protest was an unprecedented act
of defiance in heart of the United States, amongst an environment
of blind patriotism and an unquestioning support for the occupation
of communities world-wide. The police response was immediate
and brutal. An unknown number of people were attacked with
tazers and pepper-sprayed. After the police riot calmed, four people
had been arrested, three protesters and one person who was simply
in the area to show support for Bush.

A month after this traumatizing attack the three activists arrested
on the night of the 20th are know facing charges of disorderly
conduct with sentences that may carry jail time (3 days for two for
the defendants and up to a week for the other).

Now more than ever these activists need your support. The
Commonwealth's Attorney's office wants to make an
example out of those arrested with the intent to stop all dissent in
this small, conservative area of the country.
