The English Court of Appeal is hearing the case of 120 coach passengers
who were essentially kidnapped by police on 22 March 2003 when they tried
to attend an anti-war demonstration. Police stopped and searched the coaches,
then turned the passengers away from the big demonstration nearby, and
illegally detained the passengers for more than 2 hours. The police cited
the presence of protestors in white coverall suits and masks as part of the
justification for detaining the cooperative and unarmed protestors. This is
one of the first times the Human Rights Act has been used in Britain to
challenge police detentions of activists.

If you are in London to see the ESF and
related activities, please take an hour of
your morning to demonstrate. We will be
demonstrating against detentions without
arrest and activists being barred from
demos. Court of Appeal hearing follows. All
welcome, but no cameras allowed inside
court. Demo will occur outside the Royal
Courts of Justice, The Strand, Central
London, UK. More info at
The reason the police did this is that the coaches
contained the London anarchist group the WOMBLES who
police claim had previously breached the base, and
therefore were likely to attempt a similar incursion
while the US bombers were launching. The police
brought the London FIT (Forward Intelligence Team).
They got really excited when they saw the white
coveralls on most of the coach passengers and inferred
that everyone was a WOMBLE!! The coveralls were part
of the Weapons Inspector theme for the demo, but there
were certainly WOMBLES on the coaches in the
traditional white coverall outfit.

The police claim that the presence of the "hardcore
direct-actionist anarchist" group the WOMBLES
justified their repressive behaviour. We are taking
the police to the courts in order to stop this sort of
discrimination against anarchist protesters and
mistreatment of all protestors.
