From: "Update - Mohamed Cherfi" <listes@mohamedcherfi.org>
Almost three months ago, MOHAMED CHERFI, spokesperson for the Action
Committee of Non-Status Algerians, was arrested when sanctuary was broken
at Église unie Saint-Pierre in Quebec City, and deported to the United
States. Since March 5, he has been held there in difficult conditions
awaiting deportation to Algeria, where, according to Amnesty International
and the International Federation of Human Rights, his life is in danger.
A swift, large-scale mobilization across Canada (signatures from over 230
organizations and public figures, four national days of action in a dozen
Canadian cities, thousands of faxes sent to the authorities) enabled the
Mohamed Cherfi Solidarity Committee to obtain a meeting with a
representative from Prime Minister Paul Martin’s office and talks with
Québec government representatives. But the authorities still have not met
our demands.

However, a small opening was made recently. The Québec immigration
department (MRCI) authorized a meeting between MRCI functionaries and
representatives of the Solidarity Committee and the League of Rights and
Freedoms. The purpose of the meeting was to explore possible solutions for
bringing Mohamed home to Québec.

But, as yet, there has been no concrete decision made or political
position adopted. And time is running out. A breakthrough is also needed
with the federal government. We must therefore push even harder to open
the door and secure Mohamed’s return to Canada and a right of abode for
him here.

All of this shows that it is still possible to win this crucial battle for
the respect of the rights of non-status immigrants and social rights
activists. But we must act now!
