Born on 19th May 1904, Daniel Guérin came from a family which was part
of the large liberal, dreyfusian bourgeoisie. He embarked on a literary
career in his early twenties and travelled to Lebanon (1927-29),
Indochina (1929-30) where he became conscious of the colonial
oppression and became interested in socialist ideas. It was also his
"sexual dissidence" (to use the expression he himself used to describe
his homosexuality, or rather his bisexuality) that led him to fight for
the socialist transformation of society. He joined the Socialist Party
but left in 1931, disgusted by its electoralism, only to become
involved again with it when there emerged a leftist tendency, the
Gauche Révolutionnaire.

In 1932 he became an editor and joined the CGT. Then, in 1936, he took
part in the strikes which involved factory occupations.

He was one of those rare militants and intellectualss who understood
the importance of the rise in fascism and nazism which he analyzed in
the Brown Plague, then Fascism and large Capital. He was also the
author of some remarkable works on the French Revolution which
challenged the Jacobin and academic historiography of the time. His was
a fight against all political, social, economic, sexual and cultural
oppression. He fought together with Algerian and Moroccan independists
in the '30s and later with the Kanaks during the '80s.

Originally a left socialist and then trotskyite, he grew close to
anarchists from the '50s and defended a synthesis of the best of
Communism and the best of Anarchism. He joined the Organisation
Révolutionnaire Anarchiste, then the Union des Travailleurs Communistes
Libertaires, which he remained a member of until his death.

This is the life of a great figure in the revolutionary movement of the
20th century which has inspired the making of this film by Patrice
Spadoni and Laurent Mulheisen - "Daniel Guérin, combats dans le siècle

Alternative Libertaire will be showing the film on Wednesday 19th May
at 8.00pm to mark the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Daniel
Guérin, at 92 Rue d'Aubervilliers, 75019 Paris (Métro: Riquet or
