Dear comrades: Luta Libertaria was founded in June 2001 as a publishing
collective which had as one of its aims the publication of texts that
could be distributed as a contribution to debate on the historical
experiences of anarchism, with an emphasis on social, class-struggle
anarchism, committed to struggle and not simply for purely academic
motives. The idea already existed at the time that we would build an
organization. Our publishing project began with the release of the book
"Anarquia e Organização" [Anarchy & Organization], texts by Nestor
Makhno and the Delo Truda group (including the famous "Organizational
Platform"), together with debates between anarchists both in the past
and nowadays. We also published other books, such as "Socialismo e
Liberdade" [Socialism and Freedom] and some previously-unpublished
texts by Mikhail Bakunin. Recently, we published "Anarco Comunismo
Italiano" [Italian Anarcho-Communism] which includes material by Errico
Malatesta and Luigi Fabbri. Naturally we won't be stopping our
activities - there are already several publishing projects in hand and
our next book is almost ready for release as soon as some details have
been sorted out.

Since Luta Libertária stopped being only a publishing collective to
become an anarchist group, we have started to direct more energies to
our debates, always affirming our commitment towards building
alternatives and proposals which can help anarchism leave the ghetto
and make its mark in the popular struggles for social transformation.
We continue to believe that any such proposals and alternatives can
only be elaborated and put into practice through organization and
collective action. In that sense, we began a series of reflections that
we later collected into a document called "Socialismo Libertário, um
projeto em construção.." [Libertarian Socialism - an ongoing
project...]. In these 3 years of existence we have also regularly
published our bulletin "Combate Anarquista", which reaches its 36th
issue in June and deals with specifically anarchist themes and the
national and international situation.

We believe that it is of the utmost importance that anarchists
participate politically in social matters, because without that our
struggle will not advance. Unfortunately, anarchism is still permeated
by groups which believe that organization is a mistake and which prefer
to act separately and spontaneously, often jumping in feet first, with
the result that anarchism continues to be viewed by society as some
sort of "exotic plant". But happily there are those who think the
opposite and who are organizing, also through forums such as the Forum
of Organized Anarchism (in São Paulo) and in different ways in other

Last year, we also inaugurated our centre, the "Espaço Buenaventura
Durruti", which apart from being the headquarters of our publishing
activities and of our group, also dedicates space so that groups from
different parts of São Paulo can meet. It is also used for workshops in
political education, with debates on themes related to the social and
political situation we live in. We also organize monthly events monthly
on various themes to help support the centre.

During its existence so far, Luta Libertária has contined to work in
the poor neighbourhoods, in occupations of houses for the homeless, in
community radio, in the student movement, and with Popular Resistance,
always encouraging the creation of an autonomous, combative alternative
for struggle among the people.

On the coming 26th June, we will be holding a commemorative event at
the Espaço Buenaventura Durruti to celebrate 3 years of LIBERTARIAN
STRUGGLE. There will be a debate on the Union Reform which the Lula
government is trying to bring in, an exhibition of photographs and
libertarian material, and of course - a big party! We welcome all
visitors and messages of support.
