On Saturday, June 5th, a group of several hundred people broke away
from an general protest against occupation and war in
Iraq. With a banner against the G8 Summit leading the front, the
group swelled to almost a thousand as it made its way down the
Embarcadero -- a large road which runs along the northern coast of
the San Francisco peninsula. The marchers made their way towards to
Fisherman's Wharf at Pier 39, probably the most-visited spot in the
entire San Francisco Bay Area for tourists.
Mid-way down the Embarcadero, police made an order for all protesters
to move to the sidewalk. They also surrounded the demonstration after
making one targeted, snatch squad arrest.

Protesters responded by weaving on and off the sidewalk, breaking
into a sprint to outrun the police, at one point crossing through
a hilly park, all to avoid having the police corral the march.

Upon arriving at Fisherman's Wharf, protesters broke into several
groups because the police had reinforced this area with several
dozen riot police with tear gas guns -- it gave quite a scare and
a show to hundreds of tourists who were caught up in it all.

Breakaway protesters then moved in several groups back to the
departure point at Justin Herman Plaza. At the plaza, police
attempted to move in again, due to the taunts of a black bloc that
formed within the breakaway march. As minor skirmishes happened
between the protest line and the police line, the cops received an
order to pull back, which provoked cheers and calls of "cops go
home." An general official got on the PA and made a
statement for calm from both the black bloc and the police.

Then, police rushed the protesters, hitting some people and
arresting some others. Most of the protesters got away after
marching for a couple miles around San Francisco's biggest
tourist spots in an unpermitted demonstration against the Iraq
war and occupation and the G8 Summit due to begin in Sea Island,
