An award-winning documentary "Harlan County, USA" brings us an up close,
and personal view of an early 1970's strike for union recognition that saw
the coal-miners of Harlan County continue the tradition of militant
extra-union class struggle that their county is famous for. Striking to
win against a company that would fire machine guns at them on the picket
line, the actions of the miners, and notably the leading role played by
the women's committee, rapidly escalates from a simple strike for union
rights into a workers' rebellion, complete with workers defending mobile
armed picket lines. Hostile both to the boss and the corrupt union
bureaucrats the workers rely on each other in this
