ROOM 1

12.00 - 13.00
ANARCHISM AS CHURCHINESS
Usually anarchist bookfairs are like the literature
tables in the back of churches: everything is written
from an established foundation. Never the question
whether that foundation is always good enough. Should
everybody build on that foundation, things would be
better.
On the tabels writings by the fathers (Bakunin,
Kropotkin, Malatesta) and the teachers of the church
(Stirner, Proudhon), elaboration, interpretation and
apology of their ideas and criticism of other ideas.
Questions such as whether other ideas (for instance
authoritarian, acceptance of the State) may not show
more understanding of what people are made of and
whether a person like Bakunin was not unreliable in
matters of money and in his relations with other
people receive no serious attention.
In anarchism there is not a central and entirely
deified Jesus figure but there is a John the Baptist
(William Godwin), fathers of the church (Bakunin,
Kropotkin, Malatesta – enjoying general esteem),
teachers of the church (Sitner, Proudhon – people who
have contributed important ideas but have to be read
with special understanding) and saints (the martyrs of
Chicago, Nestor Makhno, Sacco and Vanzetti, Ascaso and
Durrutti: people who have practised the anarchist
ideas in heroic ways).
