Anarchy is anything but chaotic in Toronto now that classes at
Anarchist Free University have gotten into gear.
A motley mix of PhDs and power-suited people in pointy shoes
attended the first Experimental Literature class held at This
Ain't The Rosedale Library, a bookstore on Church Street.
"We had an amazing discussion," instructor Christopher Smith
said.
The school was jump-started this summer by a handful of
locals -- a tenured faculty member at an Ontario university, a
few artists, a graduate student and one who has yet to receive
a high-school degree -- who share a cynicism toward the
conventional system of education.
Small and decentralized, Anarchist U is devoid of bureaucracy
but has a closely monitored Web site and a syllabus offering
weekly classes around the city on such topics as The Russian
Revolution and Radical Approaches to Sexuality. Minutes are
recorded at its open meetings. Classes are open to anyone and
are free of charge. There are no degrees to be earned, however
-- it's education for its own sake. Hierarchy is shunned,
instructors are "resources of knowledge" rather than
authoritarian figures and students are invited to propose
courses of their own.
