Day One: Detroit is freaking cold. However, there is lots of positive energy
and wonderful folks from around the United States and Canada.
Big contingent from New York, including the always incredible
Kai and Ashanti. Also folks from Chicago, the Bay Area, Kansas
City, Philly, DC, Portland, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Baltimore, Brazil
(!!!) and many points, of course, in Canada. Must also give
respect to the Texas contingent, who traveled many hours to get here.
The organizers in Detroit have done an incredible job with putting
the event together. Between driving people to housing, from the
airport and elsewhere, to just being great hosts, this has so far been great.

Friday was dampened by the deportation of an attendee from
Denmark. No reason was given for why. We were also given the
news that Lorenzo had chosen not to go to the conference due to
recent personal conflicts.

APOC Conference: Day Two
Saturday was a great day at the conference for several reasons:
an early plenary session allowed folks the chance to introduce
themselves and talk about their work. In some ways, the
‘network’ has been the informal networks of individuals
who’ve come to this first-of-its-kind conference. More
wonderful people have shown up from all over. At this writing, we
have around 130 people in the building.

Word is the women’s-only workshop was really an
empowering experience, where women had the opportunity to
open up about various issues specifically pertaining to women of
color. In fact, an extra session and two listserves came out of the
original workshop, and will be hosted Sunday.

Okay, and here’s the final word on proposals for all you drama
hounds. At the morning session, the general body voted in favor of
hearing a speaker during the evening plenary instead of a plenary
for voting on proposals. For the record, I was NOT in the room for
this (I was working the registration table), and I was told later
that a similar decision was made during the evening plenary
(which I wasn’t at either). So before anything is said later
about undemocratic hijacking of the conference, let it be known
that we actually had a broad vote.

Gabriel from San Antonio reportedly did a great presentation on
the issue of fighting police on the attack against youth cruising. It
was a little challenging, I was told, because the cruising
phenomenon is somewhat removed from the punk subculture.
Getting people to understand the importance of police repression
in this way opened up broader discussions of class.
