Happy May Day from the Minnesota Anarchist Collective. It is interesting
to note that the anarchist origins of May Day come from workers
struggles. Anarchism has always tried to stop the tyranny of corporate
hierarchical structures. Anarchism has never seen the need for bosses,
but that the people themselves are more than capable of
self-management. There is a long tradition of what is called
anarcho-syndicalism. The basic premise of this theory is to use
Federations as the form to regulate decisions and that the power comes
from below. Their main tool that they have always tried to use was and
is the general strike. The ge neral strike is when the whole (as
compared to regular unions that only parts such as electricians can go
on strike) workplace or industry and maybe even the whole city refuses
to work, which in turn cripples the whole capitalist system and the
bosses see who actually has the power.
Workers are still struggling to this day. Just look at the news as the
airlines are laying off massive amount of employees and the same time
the CEO fucks are giving themselves huge bonuses, for their good job
(well done assholes). It is also interesting to note in Iraq that there
was a strike in Basra after British Forces cut their pay. They were
forced to so to comply with wage rates imposed by the US across the
whole of Iraq. As reported in the Times “This is cruelty,” Vahan Gregor,
a civil engineer who used to have his own company, said. “The rate is
not even enough to pay for the lift into work. A packet of cigarettes
cost more than a days pay.” And in Israel on Wednesday the Histadrut
Trade Union Federation initiated a countrywide general strike that did
shut down Israel. The general strike was to protest planned budget cuts
that are coming because of the deficit that is rising due to the
Israel-Palestine conflict. The general strike shut down air services,
ports, schools, the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, banks, and the postal system.
Happy International Workers Day,
Peace and Solidarity
