Some 3,000 to 4,000 people gathered in Burlington, Vermont,
on Saturday, March 22 for a statewide antiwar march and
rally. The largest demonstration in this city for some
decades, the permitted march also included
VermontâEUR^(TM)s largest anti-capitalist bloc to date.
After a rousing march from City Hall Park to a rallying point
overlooking Lake Champlain, the anti-capitalist contingent
invited others to join them -- by explaining âEURoecivil
disobedience this wayâEUR? -- in an unpermitted march,
which grew to between 500 and 1,000 people. Lead by
banners reading âEURoeDrop Capitalism, Not Bombs; for a
World of Direct Democracy and Mutual Aid,âEUR?
âEURoeNeither Militarism Nor Capitalism,âEUR? and
âEURoeUnite against This War; DonâEUR^(TM)t Despair,
Resist,âEUR? the breakaway march stretched across both
lanes of traffic as it wound its way through the streets of
downtown Burlington. The breakaway was accompanied by
an impromptu marching band and a variety of loud chants,
including âEURoeNews for the people, not for the
PentagonâEUR? in front of the âEURoelocalâEUR? Gannett
newspaper office, and âEURoeThe bombs are dropping; no
more shoppingâEUR? on the Church Street Marketplace by
the mall. A highlight for longtime Vermont
anti-authoritarians was the moment when the breakaway
march, numbering in the hundreds, stood in front of the
Federal Building and proclaimed, âEURoe1, 2, 3, 4, the
whole world says no to war; 5, 6, 7, 8, organize to smash the
state.âEUR? Best of all, though, was the space that the
breakaway initiated for nonhierarchical organizing and a
greater diversity of tactics in the near future as part of
VermontâEUR^(TM)s
