June 27th is Emma Goldman's birthday, a day to remember the strong women
and men of vision from our past, honor those who came before us, and
re-commit ourselves to the present and the future.
On June 27, 1919 Goldman spent her 50th birthday behind prison walls, where
she was serving a two year prison term in Jefferson City, Missouri, for
her conviction, along with Alexander Berkman, for conspiracy against the
Selective Service Act of 1917 (for publicly speaking out against conscription).
In honor of Goldman's birthday we have added three documents to our website
at http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Goldman/Features/birthday.htm recording
Goldman's June 27th, 1919 birthday spent in prison for protesting against
conscription during World War One, a well as an image from a
commemorative
pamphlet celebrating her 70th birthday in 1939.
