Support union CNT-IWA militant Carlos Martinez and anarchist activist Fernando
Perez Gorriaiz, charged with “terrorism” for protest action in Greece.
On the 3rd weekend of June, a massive protest took place in Thesaloniki,
Greece, against the EU Congress. The process of the EU is leaving most
Europeans without any representation; it is making decisions that are obviously
hostile to general public opinion such as spending more money on "security" and
repression rather than on employment, health and education, and allowing the
production and trade of genetically modified products when 98% of the
population is against it. The EU is organising, behind people’s backs, a Europe
for business, capital, bureaucracy and power, and not for political and social
participation and distribution of wealth and resources among all Europeans and
migrants.

During the protest, in the early morning of Saturday 22 June, an intense fight
occurred with anti-globalisation groups and anarchists against the Greek police
and army, after which many activists where arrested. After being interrogated,
tortured and threatened they all were released, except for two Spanish
activists: Fernando Perez Gorraiz, (Burgos anarchist group member) and Carlos
Martinez Martin (CNT union member of Aranjuez).

The status of the two detainees is still unclear; the information that we do
have is the following:

Both have been brutally tortured in the police station and the prison;

Fernando has a broken tooth and several wounds over his body;

Police pulled out pieces of Carlos’s hair, and gave him wounds and bruises over
his body as well.

The reason for their detention given by the police is property damage,
resistance to authority, public disorder, and disturbance of the peace and the
possession of explosives and weapons.
Apparently police had planted molotov cocktails and slingshots in their bags,
when all they carried were masks and clothes.

Both are now facing charges of participation in an armed group, which, if
convicted, could mean 18 months in a Greek prison.

Lawyers have made allegations and now we are waiting to see what the judge has
to say.
A network has been created to support the detainees which is organising
different activities such as fundraisers, coordination of lawyers and
broadening awareness about Fernando and Carlos’s situation. All around the
world different groups are co-ordinating actions centered around Greek and EU
interests, demanding freedom for detainees and against the repression of the
Greek State in the spirit of the protest they were arrested. Here, in
Melbourne, ASF-IWA is calling for the first action to occur here on:

SATURDAY 2nd AUGUST
in front of the
GREEK GENERAL CONSULATE,
37 Albert Rd., Melbourne
@ 12 PM.

Organise your own protest in your city: in the embassy, in the Greek
consulates, in commercial offices of Greece and EU.

Send to the addresses a protest letter as a fax. The suggested text is:
"We demand the immediate freedom of our comrades and friends Carlos Martinez
Martin and Fernando Perez Gorriaiz, as we consider the actions of the Greek
police and justice system to have been unjust and disproportionate. We consider
the arrest of Carlos and Fernando another example of the repression of
dissenters, of globalization that brings about war, injustice and misery. We
won’t stop until we have justice among our people, we won’t stop until we rid
the world of this barbarity and violence imposed daily upon us by those with a
monopoly of power."
