CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
How homosexuality is lived and named has changed
and taken different forms from society to
society. This reality, which is not mentioned or just
neglected is still in existence. Social institutions need
to deal with and control the reality of homosexuality.
This resulted in the interest of medicine, especially
in the field of psychiatry in the subject besides some
other institutions of law and religion. Each
institution viewed homosexuality within their own
perspective and classified under various categories.
Taking their own field as a standing point, these
institutions interpreted homosexuality as sin, guilt and
psychosexual disorder or diversion. However, homosexual
individuals had already started to come
together in urban areas within the course of the changes
industrialization brought in. Breaking through
the institutions? siege, the gay and lesbian liberation
movement, which evolved in this period created
and established homosexuality as a social reality beyond
an individual and psychosexual case.
Throughout centuries the reality that people of the
same sex can be sexually driven to one another
is obvious and experienced upon this land we live.
Whereas, being gay and/or lesbian? in Turkey has
come to be recognized as a reality since early 1990s.
Established as an identity and not just a sexual act,
homosexuality has been recognized by people from all
walks of life thanks to the noteworthy efforts,
participation and organization of gays, lesbians and even
heterosexuals.
Recognition and correct understanding of
homosexuality as a social reality, which came to life like
the phoenix from the flames, forces itself upon the society
as urgent need to discuss within the process
of Turkey?s social change. Obviously, that
heterosexuality is the sole determiner in social life
causes a
variety of problems in all fields of the lives of gays and
lesbians. We believe that establishing social
peace and harmony can only be attained by means of the
communication and interaction of gays and
lesbians with other components of the society. This will
only be possible by searching for solutions with
a correct, egalitarian and libertarian approach. To this
end, a symposium will be held in order that gay,
lesbian and heterosexual individuals together with
professionals, can deal with these issues and search
for solutions.
