NAZI PROVOCATION AGAINST SECRETARY OF U.S.I. ARTS & CRAFTS UNION
The General Secretary of the Italian Syndical Union (USI-AIT)
denounces a serious event which has taken place in Bitonto, near
Bari. A van belonging to comrade Gino Ancona (Secretary of the
USI Arts & Crafts Union) was seriously damaged as a result of
action by a fascist squad. The damage was accompanied by the
word "jew" written on the van together with a nazi-type celtic
cross. While expressing our full and active solidarity to the
comrade who suffered this cowardly act, we wish to denounce the
strange general "climate" which the action took place in.
For some months now, the USI-AIT has been subjeced to
"particular attention" - from attempts at criminalization (see,
for example, the dirty operation carried on by the daily
newspaper "Libero" against USI comrades from the Pordenone
section) to police reports against our militants, and even to
the annoying "interest" of the carabinieri in our sections.
In recent months, representatives of local USI unions (in the
regions of Campania, Liguria, etc.) have been "summoned" to
appear at carabinieri barracks in order to "provide
explanations" on this union's activities and membership. The
same Gina Ancona who today suffered nazi provocation had been
approached twice in recent days by local carabinieri wanting
information on the USI (the comrade on both occasions declined
the invitation, stating that they could get all the information
they needed through public channels, such as the union's
journal, "Lotta di Classe" [Class Struggle], etc.).
We repeat our desire to oppose with every means all provocations
against our members and USI shop or territorial groups and we
remind fascists (and their protectors) with short memories that
our militant anti-fascism made history in the country and that
despite all the repression we have been subject to, we have
never been bowed or defeated.
Against all provocation, against all power, for self-management
and freedom.
