From their web page:
The Iron Rail Book Collective: Politics, Culture, Literacy
Announcing!
the iron rail book collective
Let us introduce ourselves. We are The Iron Rail Book
Collective, a new group of local book lovers, passionate about
politics, our city, our world, and the do-it-yourself ethic. We
have made a space for books inside The ARK at 511 Marigny,
in New Orleans, LA, to be open to the public in
mid-November. We’re excited to be a part of such a
dynamic and creative place, and we’re excited to make
available to this city the kinds of books and information that
the corporate world won’t touch, talk about, or even
acknowledge. There is so much more out there than Barnes
and Nobles.
So what is it? It’s a non-profit reading room, lending
library, and bookshop. A news-stand, and a home for zines
and other self-published tracts and manifestos. It’s a
comfortable, welcoming, non-institutional space where we
can learn together and talk to each other. A home for
community activists, a message-board, a nexus. It’s
books that fuel revolutions. Books that teach us how to care
for our bodies and spirits. Books that remind us to protect our
air, water, and trees. Books that break our hearts and expand
our minds. Because, “the revolution will not be televised,
it will be live,” and it will be written as well. Let’s
open ourselves to the ideas that the written word can bring.
And then let’s have some conversations about it.
(A: But, how would the sewers ever get cleaned in an
anarchist society? Z: Well, you see, it’s like this, and I
think it might have something to do with this chapter in
Chomsky I was reading the other day….)
Let’s make this happen together. We need help. We need
more collective members, and we need more volunteers. We
need supplies and we need more books. We could probably
also use some advice. Consider yourself invited to
participate, in whatever way you can. Maybe you’ll just
want to come in and read some books. Maybe you’d like
to help staff the space once or twice a week. Maybe
you’d like to be involved in the day-to-day
decision-making and managing of it all, help to order books, or
figure out how to organize and lend out the few-thousand
titles that already make up the library. We’ll let you know
where the project stands, what still needs to be done, and
what we’re looking for. The more people involved in this
sort of thing, the more meaningful it will be. We’re not
doing this just for ourselves. This is for all of us.
As a last request, we’re looking for a few donations to
help get everything in readiness. We need lamps, rugs,
comfortable chairs, maybe a love-seat or two, some small
tables, office supplies, and, of course, books- the kind
we’d be proud to have in our space.
Thanks for reading.
