This past June 2003, tens of thousands demonstrated against the G8 Meeting
in Evian, France. One of the protest centers was Geneva. During one
particular demonstration -- an open borders and immigrant rights march
entitled No One Is Illegal -- protesters marched past the World Trade
Organization headquarters. There, several protesters managed to pry off
the official WTO metal plaque from the building and kept it as a souvenir.

The WTO plaque, which weighs at least 15kg, was sent by Peoples' Global
Action (PGA)-affiliated activists in Geneva to Montreal, in time for our
local mobilizations against the WTO Mini-Ministerial in late July. The
mini-ministerial was announced just several weeks prior to the actual
meeting, and was meant to built elite momentum for the main WTO
ministerial in Cancun in September. Still, activists quickly mobilized for
5 days of action against the WTO. The activities included a teach-in, a No
One Is Illegal march that attracted about 1500 people, as well as direct
action-focussed snake marches against the actual meeting.

The WTO plaque became a fixture at local Montreal anti-WTO events,
including the teach-in and spokescouncils. It was also revealed at the No
One Is Illegal march on July 27. A photo of the graffiti-filled plaque --
which was cut into two pieces to be transported properly -- is linked at:

Now, we want to send the plaque on to our companer@s in Mexico before the
upcoming actions in Cancun. But, we need your help! To send the heavy
plaque by post will cost up to C$300. So, we are soliciting your
donations. If 15 people donate $C20 (which is just US$15), then the plaque
will be on its way to Mexico in time for actions there. From the WTO
headquarters in Geneva, to the popular protests in Mexico; nothing could
be more appropriate.
