The war in Iraq comes to an end as the Anglo-American
protectorate is installed. Saddam Hussein's reign of infamy, the
war and its collateral massacres, are now followed by a
military, neo-colonial power, supported by collaborators and
extra troops. Baghdad was no Stalingrad. The people of Iraq
refused to die for their tyrants. The Ba'ath regime, a
bureaucratic and bourgeois dictatorship, collapsed not only as a
result of the strength of the invasion but also as a result of
general social dissidence. Iraqi society and the popular sectors
above all deserted this war between colonizers and despot,
between imperialist and national masters. Iraqi popular
resistance will now need to face the protectorate in the same
way it stood up to Saddam Hussein.
The deadline of the G8 is getting closer. The Évian meeting will
serve to tie up some (fruitful) compromises regarding the future
of Iraq. The division of oil resources, reconstruction markets,
the definition of zones of influence, all this will be decided
there. And it is by no means sure that the predictable victory
of the invading powers will in the long term assure Bush the
world hegemony that he had hoped to consolidate. The G8 will
also be welcoming some "gangster states", at least where
democratic liberties, individual and collective emancipation and
social rights are concerned. They include, amongst others,
China, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Algeria and Mexico. One of the tasks
of the summit will be the new conditions of the regulated stakes
in Africa, with the follow-up of the NEPAD (1). These presences
are also an opportunity to expand the resistance against the
world order.
And what will this resistance be? A protest of pure form,
brought to a conclusion by the speeches of the usual leaders,
preparing their own election or that of one of their partners,
or what about a federation of initiatives, of direct actions, of
resistance, one which is capable of letting their lordships hear
our anger? There is shortage of volunteers to tell us that the
G8 is illegitimate. Sure! Again we must to be clear on this
absence of legitimacy. The G8, the G21 or all the other
G-whatevers, is illegitimate, not because good, honest leaders
have not been elected but because of the way the system itself
works, with its societies based on exploitation and the division
between leaders and followers that forbids the dominated from
being able to run society the way they want. This is what is
unacceptable, unjust, illegitimate. And no governmental formula,
no parliamentary majority will solve this basic problem. As long
as this situation exists, resistance will be a right and a duty.
This G8 gives us the opportunity to remind people of one thing,
and that is: we are not fighting to change masters and get the
same old thing all over again, we are fighting to make a world
with no gods nor masters.
