PRESS RELEASE
12 APRIL 2003

Hundreds of thousands in the march against the "infinite war"
for peace, social justice and the rights of citizenship and
workers.

The demonstration was well above expectations on the eve of the
march as hundreds of thousands turned out in Rome. A wide
spectrum was present despite the ambiguity of the initial call
for the demo and the gap between those who supported the role of
the international organizations (UN?, NATO?) and those who have
always sustained the people's right for self-determination, the
struggle against social injustices and the development of social
and labour self-organization, direct democracy and not the
"democracy" imposed by force of arms.

After the huge demonstration of 15 February, on this occasion
too the Unione Sindacale Italiana once again worked towards the
building of a common path with the libertarian and anarchist
area, student groups and the immigrant association "3 February
Anti-Racist Association" and others such as SR.

The "self-organizaed, libertarian and revolutionary" sector of
the march was very colourful and lively, with many slogans and
an open mike on the USI truck. There were many speakers,
including immigrants, and it was a demonstration of a real union
between the self-organized workers of the USI AIT and those most
hit by wars and exploitation.

This sector of the march ended with an assembly at Piazza
Venezia near the UN offices as we did not feel represented by
the institutions who instead ended their march at the Circus
Maximus.

The only sour note was a demonstration of political immaturity
provided by some within the "Disobbedienti" movement which
culminated in a physical attack on one anarchist student and on
the USI truck simply in order to gain 50 metres advantage in the
march, in some infantile attempt to carry out "direct actions"
which have no place in their background. These people, who are
entirely incapable of "dialogue" with any other sector (as we
saw in person) prefer actions based on hegemony and on behaviour
like that of the [fascist] "squadristi" (or maybe just football
hooliganism), which has little to do with the historical memory
of workers' and social struggles.

We in the USI are open to political controntation with anyone,
and we are prepared to develop the struggle on concrete matters.
Luckily, the long history of union and social self-organization
towards "another future" is another story and represents the
political terrain which, as self-organized workers, we intend to
follow and practice from below, organizing ourselves without
recourse to juvenile, disobedient or whatever form of
rebellionism.
