*!~! Toronto Anti-War Spokescouncil !~!*

Bring the force of life to bear against the disease of war

.- Sunday, December 1st, 2002
.- Bloor St. United Church - 300 Bloor West (W of St George)
.- 12:30pm - 2:30pm

The American establishment shrewdly used the tragic attack on the World
Trade Centre to instill a fear of dissent in the North American public.

But just over a year later, a new anti-war movement is beginning to find
itself, with people from all walks of life reaching the limits of their
tolerance for constant senseless warfare; and diverse, once disparate
movements and communities coming together to add their power to opposing
our culture?s death-machine.

Public marches, speeches, spectacles and teach-ins have played and will
continue to play an important part in this movement, serving to give
people a place to plug in and educate themselves.

But with increasingly unaccountable governments, and a media losing
interest in protest spectacle, it seems to become vital that the movement
reach out in new ways, and make the links between war and daily injustices
so we go beyond a largely abstract call for peace. Our raised
consciousness must be combined with our raised voices and increased
personal and collective action to directly oppose the war waged for our
continued ?privilege? of endless consumption, and the war that consumption
wages upon the Earth.

We in the Rhubarb Collective attended the colossal anti-war demo in
Toronto on the 16th, and what we found most inspiring was the individual
people and groups taking it upon themselves to creatively and passionately
express their hope and rage, rather than relying on serial organizers to
do it for them. It was a beautiful day and hopefully a sign of things to

There are many people opposed to the war, from many contexts, who are
familiar or comfortable with many different tactics and strategies, who
are willing to go beyond mere spectacle, or who have never been to a
protest. For that reason, we are calling for a public spokescouncil on
anti-war organizing.

It is open to all individuals, groups, and tactics, as long as they are
committed to concretely reducing the amount destruction in the world. It
will not be the platform of any single organization, but a gathering of
powers. It will not be an organization itself, but a public forum.

The joyful and raging voice of the wardead is on the wind? speak with it
for a while, and join us in making it a song that can wipe away armies.
Come inspire and be inspired.
