Self-run Prisoner Newspaper

Rocco, first imprisoned during the student movements of 1968&71, has been
locked up since Dec. 1999 in Mexico city after being kidnapped near the
National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) campus during the 9-month
long student strike of that same year. In March 2000, Rocco was sentenced
to 10 years for inciting a rioting and property damage. Despite efforts
from supporters to seek justice for Rocco, he remains imprisoned. Rocco
has not been silence nor broken. As in the past, he helped to initiate a
prison newspaper -- Al CHILE -- For and By prisoners and their family
members in order that prisoners assert their rights and defend their
self-education. They are always seeking pertinent and empowering
information to publish in their self-run newspaper.

 !!Support prisoner power!!

Rocco is charged with inciting a riot during a demonstration in Mexico
City on December 11th, 1999 where 200 protesters gathered in front of the
American Embassy to demand freedom for Afro-American political prisoner
Mumia Abdul Jamal, and to express solidarity with the Seattle protests
against the World Trade Organization (WTO). On that day, 73 students were
aggressively arrested, but later released after being acquitted of riot
charges. Rocco was charged as the "main organiser" of the protest.

Rocco is also charged with damaging property considered part of
international cultural heritage. He is accused of spray painting a famous
Siquieros mural located on the university campus. The date on the mural
that referred to a future revolution was changed to 1999 in honor of the
student strike in defense of education and in resistance to economic
globalization. The mural spray painting was also part of a political event
to denounce the massacres of Acteal (1997) and Aguas Blancas (1996).
Siquieros was a revolutionary muralist imprisoned for thinking and acting
against injustice. Police had only one witness, who claims to have filmed
Rocco in the act of painting the mural, whereas many eye-witnesses have
testified to seeing another person do it.

On February 1st, 2000 several students were arrested at a preparatory
school that is part of the UNAM system. Five days later on February 6th,
UNAM was invaded by the federal paramilitary police force and 737
strikers, including students, teachers and parents, were arrested. The
extensive infiltration and espionage of the student movement enabled
kidnappings, constant harassment, rape and the imprisonment of hundreds of
student strikers. Constant pressure by the government successfully
dissuaded any competent and committed lawyer from defending students
facing charges, as is the case for Rocco.

Students who maintained an independent position from political parties,
political factions, and groups of power within the student movement and
the General Strike Council were targeted throughout the strike. Since the
end of the strike, student activists have been systematically persecuted,
kidnapped, threatened, intimidated, and publicly slandered in the media.

After 2 years of unjust imprisonment, we demand freedom for Rocco.

* Rocco is a proud anarchist. he was born in mexico from parents that
came to mexico after the civil war, escaping persecution for their
involvement with the anarchist organizations during that time.

he has always promoted anarchist literature for young radicalising
students, and was active in groups within the student movement that
worked and promoted anti-authoritarian principles and organization
structure, etc...

he was part of a book collective that provided a space for these readings
when he was younger. he was a book seller with a cart of anarchist lit on
campuses for many years before the recent renaissance of radicalism in
student movement of mexico, where he took on more of an
organising role.
